NICCOLINI FAUSTO AND FELICE; DE CARO STEFANO AUTHOR PREFACE; CASSANELLI ROBERTO ; CIAPPARELLI PIER LUIGI; COLLE ENRICO
Houses And Monuments Of Pompeii: The Work Of Fausto And Felice Niccolini
Getty Publications Los Angeles: 2002. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The discovery of and excavations at Pompeii in the second half of the eighteenth century not only provided historians with a trove of information about ancient Roman civilization but also fired artists' imaginations and inaugurated the vogue for the Pompeian style that so influenced the West in the nineteenth century. This book reproduces along with commentary Le case i monumenti di Pompeii 1854 of Fausto and Felice Niccolini the first work to present completely and systematically all the public and private buildings so far excavated in Pompeii. It features the wondrous watercolors the Niccolinis created to document Pompeii and is thus a beautiful and essential tool in understanding the excavated remains themselves and how the modern archaeologists perceived and recorded the ancient world. These magnificently reproduced drawings of the excavations are accompanied by texts that explain the documents by the Niccolinis as well as the evolution of the Pompeian style in Europe the pictorial representation of Pompeii in the nineteenth century from engravings to photographs and the evolving styles of archaeological documentation. "Superb." - Archaeology "Included in Editors' Picks" - Archaeology "The sumptuous publication not only prints some of the best of the Niccolini brothers' plates but. explains the rich and dramatic impact of the Pompeiian discoveries on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century imaginative and artistic life." - Architectural Review Getty Publications, Los Angeles: 2002 hardcover

grandes découvertes de l'Egypte ancienne
Hardcover, 253 pages, Texte en Francais, 285 x 250 mm, Tres belle exemplaire. ISBN 9782268040615.

Nicholson Henry Bigger 1925 2007 and Alana Cordy Collins
Pre-Columbian Art from the Land Collection
272 pages with diagrams photographs some in color maps tables and bibliographies. Quarto 11" x 8 1/2" bound in original pictorial wrappers. Forward by George E Lindsay. Edited and preface by L K Land. First edition. The catalog comprises most of the Mesoamerican portion of a special exhibition of selected pieces from the Land collection of pre-Columbian art. Although there are some significant gaps particularly on the Post-classic horizon the over 150 pieces in this catalog taken together constitute a reasonably representative sample of the esthetic achievement of pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica. Mesoamerican archaeological pieces have become so tremendously dispersed worldwide in recent years that it is really only through well-illustrated catalogs of this type that archaeologists art historians and other students can work effectively with adequate samples of these new data which are relevant to their interests. The principal objective of the annotations to the pieces illustrated in this catalog is to provide each with as relevant an archaeological context as possible on the basis or available knowledge. This is often difficult for the exact places and circumstances surrounding their discover are often unknown. From the time of the accidental discovery of the Rosetta Stone many pieces not recovered under controlled archaeological conditions have been made to yield by means of thorough comparative analyses invaluable archaeological information-and can continue to provide such if sufficient effort is made along this line. A serious effort has been made within these spatial limitations to relate each object illustrated in the catalog to similar pieces particularly those of known provenience and associations and to make some meaningful statement about each.Condition:Some edge wear corners bumped else a very good copy. CRUSADER CASTLES IN THE HOLY LAND - An Illustrated History of the Crusader Fortifications of the Middle East and Mediterranean
London: Osprey. 2008. First thus. Hardcover. 1846033497 . With many illustrations in colour and black & white a fine copy in a fine dustjacket. The bloody crusades that swept across the Middle East in medieval times left their mark on the landscape where fortifications which once acted as bastions of power for the beleaguered Crusader States now cast their ruined shadows over the earth. These fortifications varied considerably in size architecture and function from the mighty Crac de Chevaliers the headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller in Syria to smaller fortified dwellings and religious centers. With almost constant warfare between Crusaders and Saracens they were vitally important both as centers of defense and bases for the launch of offensive operations. This book is a beautifully illustrated guide to the development construction purpose and history of these fortifications not only in the Middle East 1097 & 1302 but also in Greece the Aegean and Cyprus 1191 & 1571. Contemporary photographs and the latest research resurrect these imposing reminders of over four centuries of conflict ; 250 x 195mm; 240 pages . Osprey hardcover
