‎Paris Librairie Générale de l'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs Charles Schmid 1897-1905. Two volumes in five portfolios. Folio. Containing a total of 200 single-sheet sepia-print aquatint heliogravure plates. Each plate measures 45 x 32 cm image size ca. 33 x 25 cm printed within a plate mark of ca. 36 x 28 cm. In portrait and landscape formats; titled and captioned within the plate mark. The First Volume contains 100 plates and pp. 15 of text comprising of 4 full-sized leaves 45 x 63 cm folded down to folio with half-title; title displaying a large vignette; Préface; Table explicative des planches. All is placed in the original full cloth orange-red portfolio with the upper cover embossed with gold lettering and decorated in blind spine frayed along edges strengthened from the inside with archival cloth. Two of the plates are trimmed somewhat shorter and slightly faded. Volume II: Comprises of 4 original quarter cloth portfolios with the original work in installments total of 100 plates. The first portfolio contains pp. 12 of text comprising of one double-sized leaf of heavy paper 90 x 63 cm and one full-sized such leaf 45 x 63 cm folded down to folio with half-title; title displaying a large vignette; Avertissement; Table explicative des planches. The original portfolios are uniform with upper board of each printed with title repeating title-page and stamped with the number of installments included. In a very good condition plates are generally excellent. ~ First edition first issue first printing. "Indeed there must have been a different printing for the Massin edition and the first issue will be of superior quality." – Marc Antoine du Ry "Medieval Art". A complete set in in 5 portfolios which includes an extremely scarce survivor of a work in installments. Published by Charles Schmid in 1897 the first volume was followed by a second published also by Schmid on the 7th of December 1905. It included a note of "Privilege of copyright in the United states reserved under the act approved March 3 1905 by Charles Schmid". A later edition by Charles Massin was published in around 1925 - while keeping the privilege line from 1905 and the publication date of December 1905. Cf. Union Catalog Hesse; Catalogue Collectif de France; British Library. Thus the Massin edition contains erroneous data. The Second Volume first appeared in 10 installment "livraisons" of which practically no survivors are left. The 10 installments are placed in 4 original identical portfolios as follows: Portfolio I: Installments 1-3 Plates 1-30; Portfolio II: Installments 4-5 Plates 31-50; Portfolio III: Installments 6-7 Plates 51-70; Portfolio IV: Installments 8-10 Plates 71-100. The "Table explicative des planches" is attributed to Georges Daumet. The wonderful plates were made by the firm Heliogravure Chauvet and hand-printed by A. Porcabeuf of Paris on the traditional hand press. Aquatint is one of the most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique known in the history of printing. It provides reproductions of paintings and of photographs with an accuracy of detail and depth of tone unlikely to be surpassed by any other technique. Among the first to experiment with this method was Fox Talbot England during the 1850s but it was around 1880 that there began the commercial development of this technique. Hector-Jean-Baptiste d'Espouy 1854-1928 was a French painter and architect professor of ornamental design at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Georges Daumet 1870-1918. This book surveys epigraphic and archaeological evidence for temple construction and renovation throughout the Theban nome during the Roman Period, studying the new inscriptions within their ritual and theological contexts. It also contains the first comprehensive treatment of the greater Theban Pantheon during the Graeco-Roman era, cataloguing over fifty local divinities and establishing their roles in various cosmogonies and mythological traditions.
