GREEK AIMS IN FORTIFICATION
Light tanning to pages. Faint crease to ffep. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; “This study explores a neglected aspect of history: the precautions upon which depended the existence of city-states, great and small, and even of a few rustic communities. Social as well as political stresses impelled the ancient Greeks to build innumerable fortifications of astonishing diversity; the book refers, merely for points of special interest, to hundreds of remains still visible in the homeland, many along the Turkish and the Italian coasts, and some in countries as remote as Spain and Afghanistan. ”; 552 pages

GREEK ARCHITECTURE
Minor shelfwear to book. ; The Yale University Press / Pelican History of Art; 432 pages; This volume describes architecture in the Greek land from the prehistoric settlements of Troy, the Minoan palaces of Crete and their counterparts in the Mycenean kingdoms, to the absorption of Hellenism into the Roman Empire. The book pays particular attention to the early period, supplying a large-scale account of the development of pre-Hellenic building. Then the evolution of temples and other religious buildings is traced. Two chapters follow the history of town planning and civic building, while others cover the development of the theatre and such topics as Greek masonry, vaulting and fortification.

Layard, Austen Henry.
A POPULAR ACCOUNT OF DISCOVERIES AT NINEVEH. Abridged by Him from His Larger Work.
pp. xxiii, 360 + Frontis. Numerous woodcuts and folding plans. Margin loss in Index. XLib. 12mo. Original full publisher's brown cloth, boards decorated in blind with designs of flowers and publisher's device. Extremities worn and slightly chipped. Remains of library numbers on spine. Hardbound. Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) was one of the leading British archaeologists of the nineteenth century. He was not a professional archeologist, and he wore many hats in his public career - diplomat, politician, art connoisseur, and a man of letters. He entered the London legal profession in 1836 under the sponsorship of his wealthy uncle, Benjamin Austen. He remained there until 1839 when he set off, with his traveling companion Edward Mitford, on his first expedition to Nineveh and the region of Mesopotamia at Mosul. Over the next decade the British Museum unloaded hundreds of tons of sculpture and artifacts from Layard's excavations. His books won acclaim for their mix of high adventure and archeology embroiled in an intoxicating stew of compelling characters and sudden crises. He made the Assyrians accessible to common people and brought alive a shadowy Biblical civilization. HOLY LAND BOX 1
