‎This collective work presents the preliminary results of excavations undertaken by the Canadian archaeological mission to Tell ?Acharneh, Syria in 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as the results of a study season of excavated materials carried out in the Hama Museum in 2004. Field reports on each annual campaign, prepared by the director of the mission, describe the architectural remains according to their chronological and stratigraphic position at the site. Those reports are completed with specialized studies, written by different experts, of various categories of artifacts recovered over the course of excavations, such as pottery, coins and chipped stone artifacts. The archaeological studies are preceded by articles pertaining to epigraphic sources which make reference to Tunip, a city which is frequently documented in ancient texts and which corresponds most probably to the site of Tell ?Acharneh. Historical documents of the Middle Ages, during which time Tell ?Acharneh became designated by the toponym Tal Ibn Macher, are also discussed in this volume. Cet ouvrage collectif presente les resultats preliminaires des campagnes de fouilles qui ont ete menees par la mission archeologique canadienne en Syrie sur le site de Tell ?Acharneh en 1998, 2001 et 2002, ainsi que de la saison d?etude du materiel archeologique, issu de ces fouilles, qui eut lieu en 2004 au Musee de Hama. ‎Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE examines the style, iconography, and symbolism of painting in all extant private Theban tomb chapels decorated during the reigns of Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III. The book studies the ways in which pictorial imagery functioned on behalf of the dead in the afterlife, presented their identity to the living, and revealed underlying religious developments with important societal implications. Various aspects of the pre-Amarna Theban tomb are explored, from the tomb's purpose as a creative and commemorative vehicle for the deceased to the placement and functional properties of its imagery. The book also discusses the different styles of painting in the chapels of state and religious officials and how these styles reveal workshop organization and "patronage" practices in Thebes. The majority of the book is dedicated to the iconography of the functioning image in the tomb chapel, its reception, and its purpose as a bridge between what was represented and what was signified, between the mundane and the sacred, and between the living and the dead. Particular attention is paid to the iconography on the "western" back walls of the transverse hall in T-shaped tomb chapels, walls that held aesthetic, cultic, and symbolic significance to the ancient Egyptians. On these walls as well as the northern or southern long wall in rectangular tomb chapels, iconography and text commemorated the deceased's personal and professional identity, projected this identity into the hereafter, and contained key components for the tomb owner's rebirth. The eternal well-being of the deceased was secured through the iconography of gift giving that also mirrored religious trends that permeated society. Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE addresses Theban tomb painting and its underlying creative and commemorative properties as a medium of regeneration, preservation, and display on behalf of the tomb owner and the world of which he was a part. ‎This book is the first in a series dealing with the excavations in the New Kingdom cemetery of Saqqara by a team of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and Leiden University. The tomb of the general Horemheb is the most important monument of this cemetery. It was found by art robbers at the beginning of the 19th century, and then lost again. Its rediscovery and partial excavation by the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and the Egypt Exploration Society (1975-1979) was followed by a publication in four volumes. However, since then new excavations by the present expedition have led to the discovery of a hitherto unknown First Pylon and forecourt. Further clearances around its perimeter walls shed new light on the adjacent tomb of Tia, treasurer and brother-in-law of Ramesses II, and on the later use of the area as a cemetery of the poor. ‎The Basilica of Sv. Marija Velika near Bale is, along with the early medieval Cathedral in Novi-grad, one of the most important Carolingian monuments in Istria. It is a part of a monastery complex, the remnants of which are still being excavated and researched. The church mani-fests traditional architectural forms: the origin of the three-aisled basilica with three-apsidal sanctuary with polygonal apses can be traced back to the time of Emperor Justinian, and the typology of capitals follows the famous 6th century examples from the basilica of Eufrasius in Porec, representing a variant of the type used in Constantinople and Ravenna. ‎This volume is the progress report of three further seasons of excavations at Tell Beydar (Syria, 1995-1997). The excavations at the central acropolis of the the IIIrd Millennium tell revealed most important Early Jezirah III and IV official buildings, including an official block (EJ III) and a series of temples (EJ III-IV). Deep soundings (fields G and I) brought much informations about the early levels of the Kranzhugel. The E field granary is fully published and adds considerable knowledge about the debated question of storage facilities in Upper Mesopotamia. The discovery of several levels of inner fortification walls proved the strategical importance of this town in the third Millennium. A considerable amount of stratified evidence is presented and helped in setting up the periodization of this urban centre, the ancient name of which was probably Nabada. Evidence from the hellenistic levels from the Upper Town enlightens the stratigraphy of this poorly known period in Upper Mesopotamia. Subartu IX includes a preliminary report of excavations at Beydar III, a Late Chalcolithic settlement.‎

‎The third volume about the Euro-Syrian excavations at Tell Beydar constitutes the progress report of the 2000 to 2002 seasons of excavations and the 2003 - 2004 (springtime) seasons of architectural restoration. The central acropolis is currently almost completely uncovered, revealing the Early Jezirah IIIb administrative centre of the ancient city of Nabada. Immediately S of the acropolis, three temples (B, C and D), workshops and storerooms are located in a specific quarter. Soundings have been initiated below the floors of the EJ IIIb Palace and Temple A, reaching official architecture from the EJ IIIa period. B Field has been extended, providing more private houses. Private houses were discovered as well in Field Q. A new area of excavations (P) is scheduled to survey the E part of the city. W of Temple C, a new area of excavations (M/O) reaches a quarter of the city seemingly devoted to handicraft and economical purposes. The hellenistic building of Area A provides clues about architecture, pottery and stratigraphy of a poorly documented period in Upper Mesopotamia. In 2003 a large programme of architectural restoration has been launched, having as main priority the preservation of the EJ IIIb official buildings of the central acropolis. The methods of consolidation/restoration/reconstruction are detailed in the volume. The hellenistic building of Area A has been restored as well.‎
