New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English and Turkish. 257 p., b/w ills. and documents. Clemens Emin Bosch, (1899-1955). Biography of a refugee academician.= Mülteci bir akademisyenin biyografisi. Clemens Emin Bosch, (1899-1955). Clemens Emin Bosch was a German scholar who began his academic career in the field of ancient history in Germany and left his country for Istanbul because of his wife's Jewish heritage at a period which he might have been very productive as an academician. When he was in Istanbul he apparently converted to Islam and took the Turkish name Emin. Clemens Emin Bosch, who lived approximately twenty years in Istanbul and died there, is widely known for his studies in the field of ancient numismatics. He joined the Side excavations (in Pamphylia) which began in 1946 and studied and produced publications on the inscriptions preserved in the Antalya Museum and on the inscriptions found during the Side excavations.

Sofular: Vertebrate fossil beds in the Cappadocia region and a new hominid site.
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 174 p., color ills. Sofular: Vertebrate fossil beds in the Cappadocia region and a new hominid site. Number of ongoing mammal paleontology studies have uncovered important findings regarding the miocene mamul biodiversity of Anatolia. This is expected to underline paleobiogeographic importance of Anatolia both local and regional scales. In addition, fosil great ape bearing sites from the Miocene of Anatolia remain an attractive study topic that captures the interest of scientists considering the origins and dispersal of fosil great apes and their evolutionary relationships with the African hominids. Fossils serve as a link between the past and the present by providing evidence of geographical change that has been ongoing for billions of years, of the effort by life to adapt to these changes, and of evolution. Everything on the Earth that we inhabit changes and develops. The story of this cycle, which takes place over a very large period of time, can be told by fossils. Let us listen to their story and discover both ourselves and the nature.

The Iznik Tile Kiln Excavations (The second round: 1981-1988). Edited by Tülay Duran.
New English Original cloth bdg. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). Edition in English. 326 p., color and b/w ills. The Iznik Tile Kiln Excavations (The second round: 1981-1988). Edited by Tülay Duran. "The progress taking place in the second round of excavations of Iznik tile kilns was starting point for the declaration of 1989 as 'The year of Iznik'. This object of this book is to provide a scholarly classification and presentation of the results of excavations that are product of eight years of effort. The finds turned up both in the first round of excavations (which began in 1964) and in the second have been eagerly awaited by Turkish and foreign art historians. We believe that the results of the work at Iznik will be an important source of information for the International Iznik Symposium that is to be held in Istanbul this year. A veil of mystery, reinforced by foreign sources, has shrouded Iznik tiles and pottery and led to a number of misinterpretations. We believe that through this book, that veil will be lifted for it proves -among other things- the error of such mistaken classifications as 'Miletos ware', 'Damascus ware', and 'Rhodes [Rhodos] ware' while at the same time in reveals the connection between Iznik ceramics manufacture and Seljuk ceramic manufacture, a fact of importance from the standpoint of the continuity of Turkish culture...". (From preface by Isil Aybakgil). One of 500 copies.

OKTAY BELLI.
The Anzaf fortresses and the gods of Urartu. Translation by Geoffrey D. Summers, Ayça Uzel.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 126 p. (32 color plts.), 1 folding plate. The fascinating pictorial scenes on pieces of a bronze shield from a room on the west side of the Haldi Temple in the Upper Anzaf Fortress, discovered in 1995, add greatly to our knowledge of Urartian religion and art. During the fire caused by a Scyhtian attack in the late seventh century B.C. objects and weapons of bronze and iron stored in this small room became molten and distorted, a large portion turning to slag. In recent years conservation of this mass of molten metal, weighing more than 13 kilograms, a number of bronze and iron objects and weapons have been recovered and preserved for the benefit of science. In particular, seven votive rings of cast bronze with cuneiform inscriptions from the co-regency of King Ispuini, Menua and Inuspua has added much to the poorly known political history in the early period of the Urartian Kingdom. Most of the fragments of bronze sheet bearing pictorial scenes come, it has been realized from the same large shield. Conservation of the bronzes is still continuing. Conservation a 78 cm. long piece of the shield over the last three years has, however, revealed scenes of great interest that shed significant new light on our understanding of the art and, particularly, the religion of Urartu. A row of 12 gods are depicted in the same sequence as the pantheon of gods in the Meher Kapi rock inscription which provides much detailed information on the religion of Urartu. Nothing similar to the pantheon in the Meher Kapi inscription, where each god is gven his divine attributes and local characteristics, has previously been found. In its 20 anniversary Arkeoloji ve Sanat is pleased to share with its readers this valuable study which, we believe, makes an important new addition to Anatolian archaeology.

Local and Global Perspectives on Mobility in the Eastern Mediterranean

Athens: Norwegian Institute 2016. Series: Papers and Monographs from the Norwegian Institute at Athens No 5. In English. Soft cover 24 cm 304 pp. ill. ISBN: 978-960-85145-5-3.

The volume is the result of a workshop held at the Norwegian Institute at Athens 11th-13th of November 2011. It addressed the different layers of mobility in the Bronze and Early Iron Age of the Eastern Mediterranean. It also concerns the intensity and scale of interaction and its role as a motor of change which represent key discourses in archaeology. The chapters in this volume deal with a great variety of materials in order to capture the multitude of connections and their impacts within and between the regions surrounding the Mediterranean. Frameworks used to explore the dynamics include Network Theory and World System Theory materiality theory and theories of embodiment to mention some. As such it is a hope that this volume will inspire researchers whether they address mobility in what in Meyer’s words could be described as a ‘satellite perspective’ or a ‘microscope perspective’.

The ten chapters could be divided into three sections along the main geographic scale addressed ‘global’ or ‘local’ and period Bronze or Iron Age by the authors. This would be a heuristic device as these scales are not exclusive but rather seek to investigate different aspects of mobility and may be regarded as complementary to each other. For instance a global scale gives the benefit of overarching perspectives while the local provides a detailed view. Both need to be grasped in order to examine the extent and impact of Bronze Age networks. Furthermore the ‘global’ and the ‘local’ are not likely to have been separated analytically by the dwellers of the ancient societies of the Mediterranean hinterlands whose everyday lives may have been tied to both spheres even if a ‘global consciousness’ may not always have been omnipresent or equally distributed. The chapters of this volume cover a large geographic area providing in a glimpse into how mobility was dealt with in Central Europe Mycenaean Greece the Levant Cyprus and Southern Italy. The Iron Age is dealt with by Momrak Mühlenbock and Kremer adding a long-term temporal depth to the overarching theme mobility.

CONTENTS:

Serena Sabatini Revisiting Late Bronze Age oxhide ingots: Meanings questions and perspectives 15-62

Paulina Suchowska-Ducke The Mycenaeans and Europe: Long-distance networks and cross-cultural communication 63-81

Katarina Streiffert Eikeland Engraving the ships.
