‎Il s'agit d'une réponse à Swinton, qui avait critiqué l'interprétation donnée par Barthélémy en 1758 de deux inscriptions phéniciennes, dont l'une conservée à Malte. ‎Édition en partie originale, la plus complète et la dernière préparée par l’auteur. Il s’agit d’un voyage historique fictif, qui est une véritable somme des connaissances du XVIIIe siècle sur la Grèce antique et qui a contribué à développer l’intérêt pour celle-ci en France et en Europe. J.J. Barthélémy a publié son Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce en 1788, après avoir travaillé pendant une trentaine d’années à sa préparation. Ce texte, destiné à des fins pédagogiques, devait à l’origine raconter la formation d’un jeune homme au cours d’un voyage. Cependant, ayant choisi de situer ce voyage dans la Grèce du IVe siècle av. J.-C., Barthelemy a été amené à composer un vaste panorama de la Grèce de cette époque. Il a séduit la société de l’époque en lui révélant pour la première fois une Antiquité “archéologique” reconstituée et vivante. De nombreuses éditions se sont succédé et ont contribué à la propagation des connaissances sur la Grèce antique ainsi qu’à la diffusion du goût néoclassique. Le premier tome est entièrement consacré à une longue introduction historique, l’atlas comporte un portrait de l’auteur, gravé par P. G. Langlois et 39 cartes, planches et vues (19bis non annoncée dans la liste), la carte générale de la Grèce, fut publié tardivement et manque aux exemplaires de 1799. Barbié du Bocage (1760-1825), géographe, cartographe, Jean-Denis Barbié, dit Barbié du Bocage, a consacré l’essentiel de ses travaux à la cartographie de l’Antiquité. Ses plus belles contributions à l’édition ont été l’atlas du Voyage du jeune Anacharsis et les cartes du Voyage pittoresque en Grèce de Choiseul-Gouffier (1782-1824).
