Life and Death at Paloma: Society and Mortuary Practices in a Preceramic Peruvian Village
xv185pp with frontispiece 39 photos 106 drawings & maps appendixes and index. Quarto 10 1/4" x 7 1/2" issued in brown cloth with gilt letter. Foreword by Robert A Benfer illustrations by Bernardino Ojeda E. 1st edtion.

Gold pomp and circumstances surrounded the mummies of Inca emperors but the elaborate funerary rites at the end of prehistory were only part of a tradition that began thousands of years earlier. Life and Death at Paloma the first in-depth treatment of burials from a preagricultural South American village analyzes the life of its people during a revolutionary time in prehistory: the transition from a hunting-gathering-fishing way of life to a more sedentary horticultural society. Drawing upon the data that he collected as part of the University of Missouri's excavations at Paloma Jeffrey Quilter gives us the first study of preceramic Peruvian life through his analysis of this site's graves and contents. His extensively illustrated book is also the first attempt to infer social organization from such data for this period circa 5000 to 2500 B.C. in Peru. In addition he presents the only available summary and discussion of the known preceramic interments from western South America. Coastal Peru is one of the few New World regions where the early development of complex societies can be studied. Life and Death at Paloma will greatly assist such research by specialists in mortuary studies in Andean prehistory and in hunter-gatherer societies.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket. The Artifacts of Dzbilchaltun Yucatan Mexico: Shell Polished Stone Bone Wood and Ceramics
xiv304 pages with maps including pocket map charts figures glossary and index. Quarto 10 3/4" x 8" bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. Middle American Research Institute publication number 50. First edition.

The archaeological site of Dzibilchaltun is located on the southwestern coastal plain of the Yucatan Peninsula approximately 20 kilometers south of the Gulf of Mexico and 15 kilometers north of the modern city of Merida. The region is a flat limestone plain about 5 meters above sea level. One large and deep natural well Cenote Xlacah is located near the center of the archaeological site. The site has been continuously occupied for thousands of years although it has expanded and contracted from mid-sized city to small town more than once in its long history. The most famous structure is the Temple of the Seven Dolls. The temple was discovered by archaeologists in the 1950s under the ruins of a larger pyramid which was constructed on top of The Temple of the Dolls. Building temples on top of temples was a common practice with the Maya. The dolls were found in the buried temple but are now housed in the museum to protect and preserve these architectural features. Though the dolls have been moved the ingenuity of this building remains. The Temple of the Dolls and its temple doorways were constructed in a specific and deliberate direction that confirms the Maya understanding of the solar system. During the Spring and Autumn equinox the sun’s rays pass through the doorways of the temples. Since corn remained a major part of the Maya diet this event had great significance to the Maya as it represented the beginning and end of harvest season honoring Yum Kax the Maya god of corn.

Condition:

Corners and spine ends bumped previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy issued without jacket. JENNINGS JUSTIN
Killing Civilization: A Reassessment Of Early Urbanism And Its Consequences
University of New Mexico Press Albuquerque. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The concept of civilization has long been the basis for theories about how societies evolve. This provocative book challenges that concept. The author argues that a "civilization bias" shapes academic explanations of urbanization colonization state formation and cultural horizons. Earlier theorists have criticized the concept but according to Jennings the critics remain beholden to it as a way of making sense of a dizzying landscape of cultural variation. Relying on the idea of civilization he suggests holds back understanding of the development of complex societies. Killing Civilization uses case studies from across the modern and ancient world to develop a new model of incipient urbanism and its consequences using excavation and survey data from atalhyk Cahokia Harappa Jenne-jeno Tiahuanaco and Monte Alban to create a more accurate picture of the turbulent social political and economic conditions in and around the earliest cities. The book will influence not just anthropology but all of the social sciences. 6 x 9 in. 376 pages 30 halftones 11 maps 4 charts. Justin Jennings is the curator of New World archaeology at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Toronto. His recent books include Beyond Wari Walls: Regional Perspectives on Middle Horizon Peru UNM Press Tenahaha and the Wari State: A View of the Middle Horizon from the Cotahuasi Valley and Globalizations and the Ancient World.
