' For many years I have felt that the prosperity enjoyed by the wage-earners of the United States ought to be equalled and even excelled by those of my country. The workers across the Atlantic pretty nearly all now own their own houses and their own motor-cars and if to-day they enjoyed the benefit of those virtues which we have derived from our Christian elementary education their country might well be regarded as a workers' paradise. It is unfortunate that despite our religious education conditions have arisen in this country that hinder the progress of our workers and tend to destroy individual development. This book deals frankly with what I believe to be our troubles in the hope that by pointing them out they may lead to the right reforms. When that happens I believe that the position and remuneration of all workers may soon be marked by substantial improvements. It is only fair for me to add that the Society which publishes this book has no responsibility for the views therein expressed. The Church of England has to some extent been identified recently with other views based I think on misconceptions; and a sense of fair play which I much appreciate has led the Society's Committee to publish my work. Idealism to be practical must be based upon Reality '.
