EISENHOWER Dwight
CRUSADE IN EUROPE Inscribed to his brother Edgar
Garden City: Doubleday & Company Inc. 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Slight sunning to the spine about Fine lacking the slipcase. First Edition preceding the trade edition. Illustrated with drawings and photographs. There were 1426 deluxe numbered copies SIGNED by the author on the facsimile page of the D-Day Order to send the troops to storm the beaches of Normandy which begins: "You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you." Of those 1426 copies the first 25 were bound in full red morocco leather and put aside for Eisenhower's personal use. This is Copy #4 and in addition to having the SIGNED order is INSCRIBED by the President to his brother on the limitation page: "For my brother Edgar/In the hope that herein/he may find some small/thing to compensate him for/all the trouble caused him/by the soldier member of the/family with lasting devotion./Ike."

Edgar N. Eisenhower 19 January 1889 - 12 July 1971 was a lawyer and the older brother of Dwight D. Eisenhower. The two brothers were known as Big Ike Edgar and Little Ike Dwight with Edgar eventually dropping the nickname. While Dwight's golf game would garner a great deal of attention and he became a most important person in the transition of golf from play to a sport Edgar was the much better golfer winning tournaments over a 20 year span. Edgar was known as a shoot-from-the-hip ultraconservative and a vocal critic of his brother the president. Edgar criticized Ike's budgets policies and judicial nominations. When the press asked Ike about the criticism he smiled and responded that Edgar had been "criticizing me since I was 5 years old." Ike's touching inscription in this book in just a few words perfectly captures their relationship. Doubleday & Company, Inc. hardcover

Eisenhower Dwight D.
Crusade in Europe
New York: Doubleday & Company 1948. Carbon copy typescript 23 chapters. 2 vols. 4to. In black morocco-grained cloth binders. Some rust and small tears from paper clips at margins else near fine. Carbon copy typescript 23 chapters. 2 vols. 4to. Carbon copy typescript of Eisenhower's memoir of the WWII European campaign Crusade in Europe. With a note from Bill Robinson Vice-President of the Herald Tribune giving this typescript to Doug Black President of Doubleday the book's publisher. It was by Robinson's insistence that Eisenhower wrote these memoirs. The typescript differs little from the first published edition with the following edits being the most significant: Chapters 16 and 17 in the typescript "Pursuit" and "Battle of Supply" are arranged with slight modification in the published edition as "Pursuit and the Battle of Supply" chapter 16 and "Autumn Fighting of Germany's Frontier" chapter 17. Chapters 22 and 23 "Europe after V-E Day" and "Russia" are also re-arranged in the published edition as "Victory's Aftermath" chapter 22 "Operation Study" chapter 23 and "Russia" chapter 24. The final paragraph of the typescript does not appear in the published edition and is replaced by an eight paragraph discussion of the merits of democracy in facing the growing threat of Communism. After a gentlemen's agreement on Dec 30 1947 Eisenhower began work on the first draft of Crusade in Europe completing it March 29 1948. This draft was finished July 4 of that year and a final typescript now at Columbia University was produced before the book was published in the fall of 1948.
