The address to the emperor includes passages showing uninhibited disdain for the Jews: ". that the Jews in Frankfurt since their first admission and up until now have been detrimental and onerous for the Christian Frankfurt merchants." <br /> <br /> The extensive report respectfully requests confirmation of the ordinance providing several attachments making their case. The attachments include A B C1 C2 C3 and C4 plus D and the text of previous ordinances providing a historical outline and details regarding the treatment of Jews historically with secondary attachments concluding with an ordinance from 1616. Contains a list of houses and occupants for both sides of the Judengasse at rear closing with the emperor's confirmation. Signed in print by Hans Ludwig von Ulm for the emperor and Johann Rudolph Bucher for the city.<br /> <br /> Text in German Gothic script. Collection of correspondence between US officials and Theodore S. Fay among others at the time secretary of the US legation in Bern Switzerland. In 1859 Fay had delivered a report to the Swiss Federal Council Memorandum concerning the admission of North American Israelites to settle in Switzerland that was important in the struggle for emancipation of Jews in Switzerland. It had provided an overview of discriminatory Swiss laws against Jews in Switzerland while going to great depth to refute arguments that supported these laws. As a result small steps were taken in the Swiss cantons contributing to the eventual emancipation of Jews in Switzerland in 1866. Missing wraps but for most of spine. Very lightly age-toned.<br /> <br /> 2. Address "To the President of the United States." Single light blue printed leaf. Not dated. Memorial of Subscribers of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania protesting against the Swiss laws discriminating against Jews in Switzerland. An attempt to influence the President to take steps to abolish the discrimination against Jews in Switzerland. Light wear along edges of leaf small chips and folded several times. Undated.<br /> <br /> 3. This Memorial. 1857. Printed Octavo circular 4pp. Protest addressed to the President of the United States against the Swiss for their restrictive laws against American Jews. Vigorous protest to President James Buchanan against blatant anti-Semitism in Switzerland. "It so happens that certain Cantons of the Swiss Confederation among which Basle and others have laws prohibiting Israelites from sojourning temporarily domiciliating or establishing themselves permanently. The treat. has clearly failed. for we are met by a dark age prescriptive law declaring us unworthy of participating in the rights of our fellow citizens on account of our professing the Israelitisch religion." This demand illustrates the disparity between the United States Constitution which protects freedom of religion and yet is not doing enough to protect these same freedoms for its citizens when they travel abroad. Signed by various Jewish petitioners including Isaac M. Wise of Ohio. Scarce: Singerman 1515 cites two other known copies of this pamphlet. Warsaw: S. Krakowskiego 1914. First edition. Softcover. vg. Octavo. 8pp incl. covers. Original covers with Art Nouveau illustration framing black lettering protected by modern mylar. Extremely scarce Polish anti-Semitic pamphlet related to the 1911 murder of the 13-year-old Ukrainian boy Andrei Yushchinsky and the subsequent trial and political scandal that resulted known as the Beilis trail or the Beilis affair. The case is considered a infamous example of the Blood libel and evidence of rampant anti-Semitism in Russia during the period. The identity of the author is not known but is credited under the likely psuedonym "Alm Fuw" on the last page.<br /> <br /> The pre-trial investigation of the case accusing Menahem Mendel Beilis Beilis Affair of the ritual murder was conducted by the foremost investigator of the Kiev Police Department Nikolay Krasovsky. Beilis a Jewish brick-factory worker was accused of the murder based on the testimony of a lamplighter who claimed he had witnessed Beilis kidnapping of Yushchinsky. Under horrific conditions Beilis spent more than two years in prison awaiting his trial which took place from September 25th through October 28 1913.<br /> <br /> The Russian right-wing press and politicians started a campaign throughout Russia against Jewish communities with accusations of the ritual murder. Despite the investigation by the local police which clearly linked the murder to a criminal gang killing Yushchinsky because he most likely had overheard conversations revealing information relating to crimes the gang committed the investigators in charge were dismissed. Evidence and many other aspects of the trial were manipulated by government officials at the highest level. Archival documents prove that the jury was rigged and monitored and witnesses were bribed or threatened. The trial sparked international criticism both from Jewish and non-Jewish intellectuals among them Maxim Gorky Vladimir Korolenko Alexander Blok and Alexander Kurpin.<br /> <br /> Yushchinsky was abducted on a Saturday morning while Beilis was at work. Ironically the alibi was the result of Beilis' unusual habit of working on the Jewish Sabbath and eventually the lamplighter confessed that he had been confused by the secret police. The prosecution's case was further undermined when it became clear that the body of the boy showed 14 wounds rather than 13 which was deemed to be in accordance with the "Jewish Ritual" a fact the prosecution had spent a great deal of effort to establish. However after several hours of deliberation the jury acquitted Beilis.<br /> <br /> After his acquittal Beilis left Kiev for Palestine and later settled in the United States. There he published his memoir under the title "The Story of My Sufferings" in Yiddish 1925 and a year later in English. Beilis story became the basis for Bernard Malamud's novel "The Fixer" which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. <br /> <br /> Text in Polish. <br /> <br /> Very light wear along edges of pamphlet. A giant of the Enlightenment and one of the greatest of French writers and philosophers Voltaire real name François-Marie Arouet 1694-1778 writes here in response to "Lettres de quelques Juifs portugais allemands et polonais à M. de Voltaire" a 1776 critique by Antoine Guénée objecting to the anti-Semitism especially as expressed within a commercial context in our author's "Dictionnaire Philosophique." Deeply philosophical and leavened with satire the 120 chapters of the seminal "Dictionnaire" were widely read much condemned and not infrequently burned as they challenged religious authority advocated for toleration and dealt with many social and political issues from an uncomfortable Enlightenment perspective. And there can be no doubt that Voltaire's "Dictionnaire" does in fact contain critical remarks about the Jews; at the same time the author's criticism is extended with equal warmth to organized religion in other forms. In the present response to Guénée Voltaire is nothing if not scathing which in the end works against him. As Voltaire scholar Andrew R. Morehouse wryly puts it the text here expands upon Voltaire's previous points in such a way as to "justify the accusation that he is cruelly anti-Semitic." Un volume (20 cm) di 106-(4) pagine. Qualche fioritura o ingiallimento. Alla fine la scritta “fine del primo volume”, e poi annuncio di un volume II “Organizzazione del giudaismo contemporanea” che non venne però mai stampato (vedi Sbn). L'autore, A. Netcvolodow, cui viene attribuita questa “raccolta di documenti e testimonianze”. viene indicato come Luogotenente Generale dell'Armata Imperiale Russa, e “Notabile onorario delli Cosacchi del Kuban”. Brossura editoriale con vignetta xilografica antisemita, indicazione di vol I°. Dalla vignetta firmata Bayeli si deduce la data, 1926. Alle copertine, qualche fioritura e alone brunito; dorso restaurato. Raro.
