Eppure nella coscienza collettiva questo lavoro non sembra lasciare traccia: Auschwitz rimane sinonimo di un male tanto assoluto quanto incomprensibile. Per questo è necessario comprendere come il progetto politico sotteso allo sterminio degli ebrei sia drammaticamente vicino a noi nel tempo e nello spazio. Il libro porta l'attenzione del lettore proprio sulla "modernità" di Auschwitz, mettendo in luce la metodologia tecnico-burocratica dello sterminio, così come la strumentalità politica implicita nella logica della pulizia etnica.

brossura Il carattere rivoluzionario, e rivoluzionario progressista, del fascismo non può essere messo in dubbio. Andrei addirittura oltre: il fascismo è stato il primo rappresentante di quelle rivoluzioni che oggi vengono definite 'rivoluzioni progressiste'. Anche l'Unione Sovietica, più o meno nello stesso periodo, assunse caratteri simili. Gli aspetti internazionalistici, libertari, distributivi e democratici del marxismo classico si risolsero in aspetti nazionalisti, autoritari, produttivistici ed elitistici di un fascismo incoerente ed incongruente. Tanto nella Russia di Stalin quanto nell'Italia fascista vennero eliminati esponenti politici di opposizione legati alla socialdemocrazia ed al bolscevismo.

"Diese deutsche Erzählung ist, so meine ich, eine politische Erzählung und läßt also unser deutsches Schicksal sehen, wie es Schulen und Parteien freilich nicht lehren, weil sie es weder können noch wollen."
