‎Dinner Menu; EB-FCD-5‎

‎New York: United States Lines S. S. United States 1965. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Event Program/Menu. Good/No dust jacket issued. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Cover has some wear and soiling. Decorative front cover has a nice picture of Schloss Neuschwanstein and states United States Lines. Four page insert inside cover. Menu for Sunday October 24 1965. Rear cover has a partial map of Germany and Bavaria and has text on Schloss Neuschwanstein. This is Presentation Number Two of a Series--An Adventurer's Romantic Odyssey. The text and imagery is copyrighted in 1960 as genuine steel engraving by Steelograph Company of New York City. United States Lines was the trade name of an organization of the United States Shipping Board USSB Emergency Fleet Corporation EFC created to operate liners seized by the United States in 1917. The ships were owned by the USSB and all finances of the line were controlled by the EFC. Among the notable ships of this period was Leviathan a contender for largest ship in the world. Eventually the line was sold and went private to continue operating as a transatlantic cargo shipping company from 1921 to 1989 and ocean liners until 1969—most famously United States. The line started with three ships from the tonnage of the failed United States Mail Steamship Company. One of the founders was Kermit Roosevelt son of US President Theodore Roosevelt. Two of the ships America and George Washington were originally German vessels that had been seized during World War I and kept as reparations. Both America and George Washington made New York-Bremen runs while Centennial State ran from New York to London. SS United States is a retired ocean liner built in 1950-51 for the United States Lines at a cost of US$79.4 million equivalent to $829 million in 2021. The ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952 and still holds title today. She was designed by American naval architect William Francis Gibbs and could be converted into a troopship if required by the Navy in time of war. United States maintained an uninterrupted schedule of transatlantic passenger service until 1969 and was never used as a troopship. The ship has been sold several times since the 1970s with each new owner trying unsuccessfully to make the liner profitable. Eventually the ship's fittings were sold at auction and hazardous wastes including asbestos panels throughout the ship were removed leaving her almost completely stripped by 1994. Two years later she was towed to Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia where she remains today. Since 2009 a preservation group called the SS United States Conservancy has been raising funds to save the ship. The group purchased her in 2011 and has drawn up several unrealized plans to restore the ship one of which included turning the ship into a multi-purpose waterfront complex. In 2015 as its funds dwindled the group began accepting bids to scrap the ship; however sufficient donations came in via extended fundraising. Large donations have kept the ship berthed at her Philadelphia dock while the group continues to further investigate restoration plans. United States Lines, S. S. United States unknown‎

‎The Bishop Murder Case: A Philo Vance Story‎

‎Charles Scriber's Sons 1929. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. First edition No jacket spine slightly cocked bottom board corners bumped. 1929 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author!. viii 349 pp. The Bishop Murder Case 1928 is the fourth in a series of mystery novels by S. S. Van Dine about fictional detective Philo Vance. The detective solves a mystery built around a nursery rhyme. The Bishop Murder Case is believed to be the first nursery-rhyme mystery book. The story involves a series of murders taking place in a wealthy neighborhood of New York City. The first murder of a Mr. Joseph Cochrane Robin who is found pierced by an arrow is accompanied by a note signed "The Bishop" with an extract from the nursery rhyme "Who Killed Cock Robin". This crime takes place at the home of an elderly physicist with a beautiful young ward and a private archery range. District Attorney Markham finds the circumstances so unusual that he asks his friend Philo Vance to advise upon the psychological aspects of the crime. Further murders connected with the physicist's family and neighbours are accompanied with similar extracts from Mother Goose such as the case of Johnny Sprigg "who was shot through the middle of his wig wig wig." Midway through the book an elderly woman confesses to the crimes but this possibility is discounted by the police for physical reasons and by Philo Vance for psychological ones. Vance and the police luckily discover the kidnapping and confinement of a little Miss Moffatt before the child suffocates in the closet in which she has been locked. Vance finally realizes the significance of one character's pointed reference to The Pretenders a play written by Henrik Ibsen; Bishop Arnesson of Oslo was a prominent character in the play. Vance arranges a spectacular finale in which the criminal is poisoned by a glass of liqueur which that person prepared for another suspect. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "S. S. Van Dine was the pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright October 15 1888 - April 11 1939 a U.S art critic and author. He created the once immensely popular fictional detective Philo Vance who first appeared in books in the 1920s then in movies and on the radio." - Wikipedia Charles Scriber's Sons hardcover books‎

Boards lightly rubbed with corners slightly exposed ink stamps on endpapers front hinge repaired chips from top jacket corners jacket edges rubbed with split along front flap fold. 1933 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author!. xii 311 pp. The Dragon Murder Case is a novel in a series by S. S. Van Dine about fictional detective Philo Vance. It was also adapted to a film version in 1934 starring Warren William as Vance. A guest at an estate in northern Manhattan Inwood Hill Park dives into the swimming pool and disappears. His murder brings up references to a mythological dragon which is said to prey on the imprudent but Philo Vance uses his knowledge of both dragons and criminals to demonstrate whodunit. The estate in the novel was based on Tryon Hall built in 1907 by C. K. G. Billings a retired president of the Chicago Coke and Gas Company. In 1917 he sold the mansion to John D. Rockefeller Jr. The mansion burned down in 1926 and Rockefeller developed the property and others into Fort Tryon Park which he then donated to New York City. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "S. S.
