MONTGOMERY, James .:
The World before the Flood a poem in Ten Cantos: With Other Occasional Pieces. By James Montgomery. Seventh Edition.
London: Printed for Longman Rees Orme Brown & Green Paternoster-Row. 1826 . 12mo. pp.18/pp.294 . 16.8cm x 10.5cm x 2.5cm. A very good full leather binding. Polished dark brown calf bords with a few chips and scuffs. Spine carefully repaired preserving original black leather title labels: "World Before The Flood". & "Montgomery - London. 1826." Marbled endpapers and matching page edges. Hope against hope and ask till ye receive. - The World before the Flood canto V James Montgomery November 4 1771 - April 30 1854 was a British editor and poet. Son of a pastor and missionary of the Moravian Brethren was born at Irvine in AyrshireNovember 4 1771 and educated at the Moravian School at Fulneck near Pudsey in Leeds. After various changes of occupation and abode he settled in Sheffield in March 1792 as clerk to Joseph Gales on the 'Sheffield Register' newspaper. On July 4th 1794 he launched and edited the Sheffield Iris and was twice imprisoned in 1795 and again in 1796 for political articles for which he was held responsible. In 1797 he published Prison Amusements; but his first work to attract notice was The Wanderer of Switzerland 1806. It was followed by The West Indies 1809 The World before the Flood 1812 Greenland 1819 and The Pelican Island 1828 all of which contain passages of considerable imaginative and descriptive power but according to literary analysts are lacking in strength and fire. He himself expected that his name would live if at all in his hymns and in this his judgment has proved true. Some of these such as "For ever with the Lord" "Hail to the Lord's Anointed" "Angels from the Realms of Glory and "Prayer is the Soul's Sincere Desire" are sung wherever the English language is spoken. Probably his best-known poems are the one commemorating Arnold Winkelried 1 and "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief". Montgomery was a good and philanthropic man the opponent of every form of injustice and oppression and the friend of every movement for the welfare of the race. London: Printed for Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, Paternoster-Row. 1826 . hardcover

The Yearbook of The United States Chess Federation 1940 Volume 6

viii9-755 ad pages with photograph tables and diagrams. Royal octavo 9 3/4" x 6 1/2" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover.
Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5615; Betts: 25-148 First edition.

Contains a selection of games from the championship with annotations from various sources and a review of the tournament by Fred Reinfeld. A selection of 10 games from the U S Open in Dallas1940 with annotations from various sources and a commentary by George Sturgis. A chess bibliography from 1940 by Albrecht Buscheke and other articles.

When we look back at the 1940 Championship the key final round matchup between Fine and Reshevsky is certainly the most studied and heavily analyzed. Reinfeld treats it in the May 1940 issue of Chess Review and Santasiere annotated it for the American Chess Bulletin. Analysts generally agree that Fine missed his chance to win on his 27th move and the drawn game gave the title to Reshevsky.

Third place went to Issac Kashdan. Kashdan first came to prominence in 1928 when he won the individual gold medal as first board for the United States in the Chess Olympiad and he successfully competed in many international tournaments in the 1930s. After his tournament days were over Kashdan served Caïssa through his writing and organizing. Kashdan founded the Chess Review with I.A. Horowitz in 1933. He penned the chess column for the Los Angeles Times from 1955-1982 and he was instrumental in organizing the Piatigorsky Cups and the Lone Pine tournaments.

Condition: Spine ends chipped corners bumped and rubbed gilt dulled some soiling inner from hinge over opened isle good.
United States Chess Federation hardcover
