China: Political Commercial and Social in an Official Report to Her Majesty's Government.
London: James Madden 1847. First edition of this historical survey and analysis of the British position in China. The author served as Colonial Treasurer of Hong Kong from 1844 to 1845 but resigned following a disagreement with superiors over the prospects of the colony Martin saw Hong Kong as doomed to failure. He was also a staunch critic of the opium trade. Throughout his professional career Martin c.1802-1868 wrote extensively on colonial matters. "His life was dominated by a self-appointed task - the study of the British empire which Martin saw in terms of a vast free-trade area of new territories in allegiance to the British crown" ODNB. In his dedication to Queen Victoria he describes the development of Hong Kong as a "wasteful application of Your Majesty's treasury. and an erroneous course of national policy." An advertisement in the text gives a print-run of 2000 copies. 2 vols octavo. Vol. I with large folding map hand-coloured in outline as frontispiece 4 folding tables 2 folding maps 6 pp. publisher's advertisements at end of Vol. II. Ireland Before and After the Union with Great Britain
London: Wm. S. Orr and Co 1843. Very Good. Scarce first edition. In his preface the author documents the many charges made against England since its having united legislatively with Ireland in 1800. These charges include having conquered Ireland destroyed its independence practiced cruel oppressions and having brought about a union that has "produced misery wretchedness exhaustion and destitution." Martin in this book sets about addressing these allegations and charges by carefully and minutely examining these charges and endeavoring to discover the truth. In his dedication to Sir Robert Peel former Secretary to Ireland Martin states that his examination shows that Ireland had her population doubled and her shipping and commerce quadrupled since the union. He cites progress across the economy commerce social well being and more. He produced statistics and data to support his findings. Bound in contemporary three quarter black leather with blue and black marbled paper boards page edges and endpapers. Leather rubbed and corners bumped. Marbled boards are scuffed. MARTIN, Robert Montgomery
BRITISH POSSESSIONS IN AFRICA

London. the leather is Slightly rubbed gold motif on each corner is in very good condition; 5 raised bands on spine with gilt lineations; skiver with title on spine is dull. 2 bookplates and a dealer's sticker on front paste-down. There is a moderate amount of foxing on the end papers and the verso to the first map in the series. This copy has no title page which appears to be standard - I imagine because it was included on Vol 1 only. So no definite printing date can be given. The last date in the text is 1853. Mendelssohn SA Bibliography on page 988 lists the book as "The British Colonies Division VII and printing date 1851 but he probably took the date from Vol 1. Frontis of Sir Ralph Abercromby 1734-1801 hero of Aboukir Bay 1801; with tissue guard; 208 pages with tables; 5 double page col maps with vignettes all unfoxed and very frame-able : Africa; Cape Colony; Natal and Kaffraria; Western Africa; Islands of the Atlantic with lovely engravings of landscapes by J Rankin and others. All maps have an extra crease 70 - 120mm long which with care could be ironed out. Each map could be worth US$ 85. Quarter Calf and Marbled Boards.
