Illustrated with photographs drawings and maps. Copy #416 of 500 copies printed on Ruisdael paper and SIGNED by the author on the limitation page in the first volume. Roosevelt loved travel. Before becoming governor of New York he served in Cuba as Colonel of the First United States Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish American War. After his election as President he traveled to Panama to oversee the construction of the canal becoming the first standing President to travel abroad. Shortly after he retired from the Presidency in 1909 Roosevelt sailed for Africa returning a year later. Very good minus Vol. 1 has front cover reattachment repair with Japanese paper and chip at base of front bottom spine/not issued. SIGNED "Theodore Roosevelt" on limitation page. This coveted edition of Roosevelt's memoir in Africa with his son is a centerpiece of any presidential bookshelf. 9.75" x 6.5" Vol 1 pp. xvi 1- 268 23 illustrations frontispiece and map Vol II vii 269 - 529 with frontispiece and 24 illustrations. Printed on special Ruisdael paper fading at the first several pages of each corner caused from the leather corners. The tipped in limited edition page has several small chips where the paper extends from the text block light wear at the corners uneven aging to the spine. Illustrations have tissue guards with captions printed opposite. Less than three weeks after stepping down from the presidency outgoing American president Theodore Roosevelt combined with and outfitted by the Smithsonian Institution sailed for an African expedition. Its purpose was to collect specimens for the Smithsonian's new Natural History museum now known as the National Museum of Natural History. The expedition collected around 11400 animal specimens which took Smithsonian naturalists eight years to catalog. Following the expedition Roosevelt chronicled it in his book African Game Trails. Very good. 8" x 5.5" uncut fore and bottom edge 9/8 B&W photos in both volumes. Vol. 1 has previous owner bookplate other wise internally clean. Light wear to head / foot of spines otherwise incidental external wear and some darkening to spine. Following his service as President Roosevelt and his son Kermit "my side-partner in our great adventure" went on safari in Africa. Hundreds of their killed and captured specimens were returned for preservation at the Natural History Museum in New York City. "We only shot for meat or for museum specimens - all the museum specimens being used for food too -and as he naturalists were busy as they well could be we found that except when we were after rhinoceros it was not necessary to hunt for more than half a day or thereabouts." p 509. Butler Esq/ with the thanks and/ regards of Theodore Roosevelt/ Nov. 1st 1910". With a two-page autograph letter from Roosevelt to Butler. Original publisher's brown gilt-stamped cloth. Some fading and dampstaining to spine split to lower spine at rear joint else very good. Housed in a quarter-leather custom folding box. Arthur Lennox Butler 1873-1939 son of ornithologist and bird collector E. A. Butler 1843-1916 was Curator of Selangor State Museum Malaya and had one bird and four species of reptiles named in his honor including the East African venomous snake Chilorhinophis butleri or Butler's two-headed snake. It was during his appointment as Superintendent of Game Preservation in Sudan 1901-1915 that he met Roosevelt as he led the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition in 1910. Roosevelt's two-page autograph letter is written from Gondokoro Southern Sudan on 27 February 1910: "Dear Mr Butler/ �We have obtained white/ rhino giant eland buffalo/ roan &c. We'll have little/ time to hunt now�/ Mohammed has proved/ excellent; just what we/ needed. I'll send you the 100 piastre/ you so kindly advanced/ as soon as I can get/ a check book"./ With hearty thanks/Sincerely yours/ Theodore Roosevelt." Only three weeks after he was succeeded as president by William Howard Taft in 1909 Theodore Roosevelt embarked to British East Africa on The Smithsonian East Africa Expedition. Roosevelt was accompanied by his son Kermit who served as official photographer and to whom this text is dedicated. The expedition collected over 20000 specimens which would take the Smithsonian over eight years to catalog. During the yearlong trip Roosevelt wrote monthly report articles about the expedition for Scribner's Magazine; in 1910 the articles were published in book format as African Game Trails.
