La preservación de los "saber-hacer" tradicionales implica una extensa red de interrelaciones debido a su complejidad y a los cambios que han experimentado a lo largo del tiempo para tener continuidad. Por ello es preciso estudiarlos desde una perspectiva holística pues partir del conocimiento de su historia y sus características originales es posible señalar con claridad dichos cambios y transformaciones. Es preciso conocer además la función que han desempeñado tanto en los grupos en los que forman parte de su tradición como las que les han otorgado otros sectores externos entre ellos sus consumidores. Desde este punto de vista resulta claro que su análisis nos remite a una dinámica multifacética que determina en gran medida sus transformaciones semánticas utilitarias estéticas y desde luego técnicas y materiales. Como resultado de ello los "saber-hacer" tradicionales enfrentan importantes circunstancias que en algunos casos las sitúan en condiciones de riesgo para su continuidad y paradójicamente es así como en realidad pueden preservarse. Este trabajo se refiere al estudio del "saber-hacer" tradicional del maque o laca mexicana abordado desde esta perspectiva holística. Se destacan sus transformaciones técnicas y materiales acaecidas a lo largo de su historia generadoras de su situación actual de riesgo. El propósito ha sido conocer las particularidades de estos cambios y su trascendencia en el resultado de su práctica; esto ha permitido identificar las características materiales que mejor responden a su definición. Se espera con ello poder guiar la corrección del rumbo de su práctica actual como una medida indispensable para asegurar su continuidad y con ello su preservación para las generaciones futuras.
