‎Summary During the Ancient Greek and Roman eras, participation in political communities at the local level, and assertion of belonging to these communities, were among the fundamental principles and values on which societies would rely. For that reason, citizenship and democracy are generally considered as concepts typical of the political experience of Classical Antiquity. These concepts of citizenship and democracy are often seen as inconsistent with the political, social, and ideological context of the late and post-Roman world. As a result, scholarship has largely overlooked participation in local political communities when it comes to the period between the disintegration of the Classical model of local citizenship in the later Roman Empire and the emergence of 'pre-communal' entities in Northern Italy from the ninth century onwards. By reassessing the period c. 300-1000 CE through the concepts of civic identity and civic participation, this volume will reassess both the impact of Classical heritage with regard to civic identities in the political experiences of the late and post-Roman world, and the rephrasing of new forms of social and political partnership according to ethnic or religious criteria in the early Middle Ages. Starting from the earlier imperial background, the fourteen chapters examine the ways in which people shared identity and gave shape to their communal life, as well as the role played by the people in local government in the later Roman Empire, the Germanic kingdoms, Byzantium, the early Islamic world, and the early medieval West. The report addressed to Charles Gilpin Esq. of the US District Attorney's Office describes the arrival of the Ship Bombay from Liverpool upon which various violations of current laws are discovered - there are 29 1/2 passengers when only 13 1/2 are allowed only 12 berths are present with the majority of them less than 2 ft. wide and one of them less than 6 ft. long the height of the booby hatch is 1 ft. 4 in. shorter than the one specified by law and so on. The last paragraph of the document specifies the fines to be imposed including $50 per head for the extra 16 passengers to the amount of $800 and $5 per head for the narrow berths for 29 1/2 passengers to the amount of $147.50 for a total of $947.50. Though unmarked as such this copy was formerly owned by Lester Knox Little 1892-1981 the service's last inspector-general and was acquired by a private collector from his family in 1999. This handbook is scarcer than most customs service publications most copies likely not surviving the ravages of use onboard ship. WorldCat shows that the New York Public Library holds both editions and a copy of the second can also be found at Cornell. Small octavo. Folding Chinese compass diagram. A scarce customs service publication First edition first printing of this informative tribute to the 66 employees of the custom service who served during the First World War as well as the 23 men killed during the conflict. Copies are recorded in just four institutional libraries British Library Leeds Cornell and the University of Hong Kong. For each member of staff sections give their record of service ranks the countries and battles in which they fought honours and wounds received and "other particulars of interest". The majority served on the Western and Eastern Fronts and several were seconded to the Chinese Labour Corps on account of their linguistic skills. The final entry concerns G. R. G. Worcester 1890-1969 whose works on Chinese craft and navigation remain definitive. Octavo. Roll of honour plate decorative title page and initial text printed within red frames.
