Jos� Luis Rey Vila Cadice 1900 - Paris 1983 was a Spanish artist from Cadice. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of Cadice and of Barcelona. In 1921 he returned from North Africa with an album of drawings against politics. In Barcelona he worked as illustrator and cartoonist for Ford and as illustrator for several art magazines. In 1936 he participated as an artist in the Social Revolution. He realized a watercolor album "Estampas de la revoluci�n espa�ola" for the international propaganda. Every drawing is accompanied by a comment in three different languages Spanish English and French. This album was curated by CNT-FAI and became - before Picasso's Guernica - the most famous artwork about the Spanish Revolution. He adopted the name of SIM to protect his family in Siviglia. His artistic style is characterized by strong and rigid oulines. In 1937 he moved to Paris for the International Exposition. He opened his atelier in Buttes-Chaumont. He often travelled around Europe and exhibited his works in Paris and La Havana. He has never gone back to Spain. The album is a collection of watercolors from life following and commemorating the inauguration of the Suez Canal from the ceremonies of 16th November 1869 up to the crossing between the 17th - 20th November. . . . They related to the lithographs Pueblo and Veronica; De Soto editions nos. 9 and 10 Adja Yunkers 1900-1983 was an American abstract painter and printmaker. He was born in Riga Governorate of Livonia Russian Empire in 1900. He studied art in Leningrad Berlin Paris and London. He lived in Paris for 14 years and then moved to Stockholm in 1939. In Stockholm he published and edited the arts magazines ARS magazine and Creation magazine. In 1947 he moved to the United States where he lived for the rest of his life. He held a teaching position at the New School for Social Research in New York while summers were spent teaching at the University of New Mexico.1 In 1949 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. During the 1950s he primarily worked in color woodcuts introducing brushwork into the genre. In 1960 he began producing lithographs. He produced two important series of lithographs at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles Salt five lithographs and Skies of Venice ten lithographs. Yunkers died in New York City in 1983. Osmond was educated privately and from 1917 studied at Regent Street Polytechnic earning his Art Teacher's Diploma and a Diploma in Art History in 1924. He taught part-time at Hastings College of Technology Sussex and at Hornsey College of Art whilst exhibiting his work primarily painting in oils and illustrations in wash and line. Osmond was married to Constance M. Biggs a sculpter who also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1927 and turned freelance in 1928 contributing illustrations to Hutchinson' Pie and to books including a Reader's Library edition of Black Beauty 1932. He began writing and illustrating his own books in the early 1950s the first of which A Valley Grows Up was published by the Oxford University Press in 1953. It went on to win the Carnegie Medal for the year's most outstanding children's book in 1954. That same year Osmond began writing and illustrating the Animals of the World series for Oxford University Press 1954-57 which were widely praised for their depth and detail. Osmond subsequently wrote and illustrated a wide variety of books including From Drumbeat to Tickertape 1960 a study of communication The Artist in Britain from the eighth to the twentieth century 1961 and Exploring Fashions and Fabrics 1967. Percy Herbert Osmond a clergyman with the Church of England and his wife Agnes Paulina n�e Sadler and grew up in Surrey where his father was appointed to the vicarage of Ewshot near Farnham in 1906. Osmond was educated privately and from 1917 studied at Regent Street Polytechnic earning his Art Teacher's Diploma and a Diploma in Art History in 1924. He taught part-time at Hastings College of Technology Sussex and at Hornsey College of Art whilst exhibiting his work primarily painting in oils and illustrations in wash and line. Osmond was married to Constance M. Biggs a sculpter who also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1927 and turned freelance in 1928 contributing illustrations to Hutchinson' Pie and to books including a Reader's Library edition of Black Beauty 1932. He began writing and illustrating his own books in the early 1950s the first of which A Valley Grows Up was published by the Oxford University Press in 1953. It went on to win the Carnegie Medal for the year's most outstanding children's book in 1954. That same year Osmond began writing and illustrating the Animals of the World series for Oxford University Press 1954-57 which were widely praised for their depth and detail. Osmond subsequently wrote and illustrated a wide variety of books including From Drumbeat to Tickertape 1960 a study of communication The Artist in Britain from the eighth to the twentieth century 1961 and Exploring Fashions and Fabrics 1967. He continued to produce popular books on animals and the peoples of other lands as well as illustrating The Thames Flows Down 1957 written by his wife under the pen-name Laurie Osmond.
