Portland Oregon 1960. 10" x 7" black leather 3-ring binder silver ink and label sticker to spine front hinge cracked articles fixed to both pastedowns rings full of articles and notes with several others laid in. <br /> <br /> Astrological reference notebook belonging to Portland area astrologer Helen McFarland who advertised readings and classes in Portland area newspapers from about 1937 until 1963. She specialized in scientific astrology and offered personal and business counseling. Her husband held many offices in his local masonic lodge and was a member of the Scottish Rite.<br /> <br /> The majority of this collection is articles from astrology magazines that she has organized and notated. Publications included are American Astrology International Astrology Wynn's Astrology Magazine Horoscope and World Astrology Magazine. Some noteable authors included are Manly P. Hall and Dane Rudhyar. There are several handwritten pages in the binder rings and laid in. There is also one typed page copied from "Your Place Among the Stars" by Evangeline Adams. Most of the articles are dated between 1936-1940 with one as late as 1960. unknown

Charles IX of France 1550-1574 -- Jacques de Viard fl. 1559 -- Astrology
likely Paris early 19th century. 77pp. Manuscript on paper in French written in a uniform script in a significantly later hand c.1800 docketed copie dun ecrit de cet auteur the manuscript is a complete transcription of a fair copy of an astrological treatise which first appeared in 1555 written by prominent French astrologer and doctor Jacques de Viard; according to the dedication it was first transcribed in 1573 or 1574 when Viard would have been 56 years old. Containing three pen and ink diagrams depicting the twelve astrological houses with signs for the planetary rulership and planetary joys. Original 19th century wrappers; edges uniformly browned slightly brittle. The treatise is dedicated to Charles IX of France 1550-1574 who at the time of the original transcription c.1573 would have been suffering with tuberculosis and in his last year of life. The text was possibly revived at the request of the ailing king who like many of his peers relied on astrology to predict the future and distinguish the true from the false in their lives. This 19th century copy is an important record and is confirmation of the existence of this text. <br/><br/>Jacques de Viard describes himself as Docteur en chacune faculté: Astrophil Medecin Conseiller et Phisiologue ordinaire du Roy et de la Royne and was an advisor who was intimately associated with the French court. Viard had also published the Fatal Diurnal 1567 a philosophical work which associated him with the prophetic Nostradamus. Nostradamus b.1503 a French physician and astrologer was the official court physician King Charles IX from 1564 until his death in 1566. It is possible Viard had become acting physician-in-ordinary or counselor to the King after Nostradamus death. Undeniably Viard was part of that circle in which prophecies horoscope and conspiracies dominated 16th century; astrology and sky observations played an important role in the courts of Europe at this time. This rare treatise is a fine example which confirms these popular notions. It is an exceptional survival of Viards collected studies on astrology. Viards treatise is dominated by the traditional division of astrology systems into twelve houses the horoscopes whose positions depend on time and location rather than on date. Furthermore the houses are also grouped together by Triplicity a theory which places one of the four elements fire earth air and water in the zodiac sign which it rules. It is possible Viard may have tried to give new elements or theories in his treatise for this branch of astrology in order to satisfy one of the Kings last requests. Rare transcription from a fair copy of an important 16th century astrological text by Jacques de Viard. Made for or associated with the royal court of King Charles IX of France. unknown

Rolled. Very good. <br /> <br /> An attractive poster which plots the predicted path of Halley's Comet prior to its return in 1986. Anderson thanks Yeomans in the credits for his calculations mentioning he was only .6" arc off from his predicted position when Halley's was recovered in October 1982. Anderson provides a scientific overview of the construction of comets a predicted timeline against a backdrop of the zodiac constellations myth and history around the comet and information on Halley and telescopes. <br /> <br /> We find no mention of this poster in OCLC nor elsewhere.<br /> <br /> . A good sound copy. <br /> <br /> Interesting and scarce pitch-book sold at performances by the popular American mentalist and vaudeville performer Leona LaMar 1883-1941. At the height of her fame in the 1910s-1920s LaMar grossed $2500 per week for her shows. Discusses the development of mental powers including telepathy and genius prophecy character reading through features astrology etc. We identify a couple other iterations of this booklet with varying paginations and titles though each cover bears her billing as "The Girl with 1000 Eyes." We find no holdings for this book nor others from LaMar in OCLC. Leona La Mar unknown

Bound in publisher's red cloth with gilt spine titles in plain printed jackets. Near fine books in very good jackets with some wear and light staining. <br /> <br /> First edition of Budge's important translation of the great Syriac "Book of Medicines" edited from a manuscript that was in his possession and an English translation of the same. The work is uncredited but was translated from Greek into Syriac by a physician who was likely a Nestorian and perhaps attached to one of the great medical schools at Edessa Amid or Nisibis. The first section is a series of lectures which give detailed descriptions of human anatomy prescriptions for and descriptions of various diseases and is fundamentally similar to Hippocrates who is quoted in several places in the text. <br /> <br /> The second section is astrological and includes omens spells divinations and planetary forecasts. The final section contains 400 prescriptions that illustrate folklore of Mesopotamia including legends about birds animals magical roots etc. similar to a medieval Bestiary. <br /> <br /> <br /> A very nice set and quite scarce in the jackets. . Horizontal folds wear and light chipping to wrappers. Very good. <br /> <br /> First edition of Professor Seward's 35th annual reading this edition for the Aries sign. Nice bit of capitalism from the self-proclaimed "World's Foremost Astrologer" about which surprisingly little has been written. Seward authored several books the first of which appeared in 1915 a self-published work called The Zodiac and its Mysteries. He appeared on radio programs in the 20's and 30's and made sound recordings for Victor Records of sun sign information. This particular publication came from one of his three U.S. offices in Atlantic City one of the main attractions on the boardwalk. <br /> <br /> <br /> Scarce. Some dust soiling to title page few marginal marks in pencil otherwise clean and complete. <br /> <br /> The Miraculous Prophecies Predictions and Strange Visions of Sundry Eminent Men &c. from the first dawn of literature touching revolutions that have happened and revolutions to come in which is given a most striking and faithful picture of the times with what is to follow together with an account of Babylon's fall or the destruction of popery and in that glorious event a general reformation over all the World.<br /> <br /> An interesting and scarce collection of prophecies many astrological and including those of Michael Nostradamus from 1555 extracted from the authors' original writings. This sensationalist compilation was published in the throws of the French Revolution many of the writings specifically dealing with that conflict. Perhaps these were handed out by a business of some sort or were meant as inserts for some publication. Whatever the case we find little mention of these leaflets elsewhere. Armorial bookplate of Adam Urquhart Esq. to front pastedown else clean internally and with minimal foxing. <br /> <br /> One of roughly half a dozen early English printings in the original Latin of the humanist poem by Neopolitan poet Marcello Stellato ca. 1500-1550. The work is divided into 12 books each for a sign of the Zodiac. <br /> <br /> Originally published in 1536 in Venice the poem was first translated into English by Barnaby Googe six books published in 1561 and then the complete Zodiake of Life in 1565. It was widely read and distributed in London and also taught in early English grammar school. Shakespeare almost certainly studied the work and it is thought to be the inspiration for his "All the world's a stage" monologue from As you Like It. <br /> <br /> Editions printed in London of this famous poem are markedly less common in the trade than other continental printings.<br /> <br /> Gardner 893. Fu studioso insigne e interessato alla dimostrazione della falsità di molti miti e leggende oltre che un curioso studioso. Si veda ad esempio il suo interesse per i sordo-muti. In quest'opera sono conservati alcuni suoi scritti dedicati a: Sirene, Tritoni, Nereidi e altri curiosi esseri marini; Sulla Baguette divinatoria; La pietra filosofale; Un interessantissimo capitolo dedicato ai sordo-muti e la maniera in di fargli apprendere le nozioni scientifiche e il modo di comunicare; Varie curiosità naturali; Sulla vanità dell'Astrologia, della fisionomia e della chiromanzia; Sui filtri amorosi e l'erotomania; sulla "Vegetations de l'or et des autres Metaux". Generally very good with toning some foxing to versos few small edge tears and transmittal folds. <br /> <br /> Two very interesting letters from "Fredrick" Frederick White 1866-1939 to a Mrs. Erna Tayler discussing her progressed horoscope and offering financial advice. <br /> <br /> White was an American astrologer author and editor/publisher of The Adept: The American Journal of Astrology. One of the pioneers in the field of financial astrology White along with "Professor Weston" a regular contributor to The Adept heavily influenced W. D. Gann who published his famous novel The Tunnel Thru the Air in 1927. White's 1904 work A Guide to Astrology is included in Gann's reading list. <br /> <br /> <br /> The letters are full of specific financial readings. For instance the first letter of 1933 while advising Tayler on making investments goes on to expansively explain the reasons for the Depression were "a series of bad aspects between Saturn Uranus and Neptune." that some stocks were better to buy into than others and that Tayler's chart had favorable periods to play the lottery.<br /> <br /> These letters represent manuscript examples from the heyday of early financial astrology from one of the field's most influential figures. . Generally very good or better with toning and a few dog-eared corners. <br /> <br /> Scarce set of five self published pamphlets by the American composer/astrologer Dane Rudhyar 1895-1985. This is a mixed set from his Seed For Greater Living series each is continuously paginated by series and between 12-36pp in length. Includes:<br /> <br /> Toward the Life of Plentitude Part IV; and The Way "Through: Twelve Basic Challenges and Tests of Individual Existence Parts 4 6 8 and 9.<br /> <br /> OCLC lists these pamphlets as being published between 1957-1962 with the "Way Through" booklets all dated 1961. Nearly fine with a few smudges to boards. <br /> <br /> One of Michigan occultist Freemason astrologer and publisher Lyman E. Stowe's 1843-Ca. 1920s strange self published works described on the title as "A series of short occult stories real experiences during the life of a man 72 years of age garnished in the clothes of fiction."<br /> <br /> Most of his books including the present are quite eclectic blending spiritualism astrology Gnosticism prophecy Karma biblical history and other esoteric systems. In this light Stowe was truly a precursor to the modern freethought movement being mainly influenced by his parents exploration of various religious beliefs. <br /> <br /> As with other titles from Lyman Stowe this book is scarce. Some scuffing and soiling to boards bookplate to front pastedown else clean internally and very good. <br /> <br /> Scarce first edition of this text which prints and explores the importance of Neapolitan poet Marcello Stellato's Ca. 1500-before 1551 widely read and studied astrological poem Zodiacus Vitae.<br /> <br /> Originally published in 1536 in Venice the poem was first translated into English by Barnaby Googe six books published in 1561 and then the complete Zodiake of Life in 1565. It was widely read and distributed in London and also taught in early English grammar school. Shakespeare almost certainly studied the work and it is thought to be the inspiration for his "All the world's a stage" monologue from As you Like It. <br /> <br /> This publication also contains an appendix by English astrologer Walter Gorn Old or "Sepharial" as he was known titled "The Astrological Aspect of the Zodiac of Life."<br /> <br /> OCLC cites perhaps 7 physical holdings. .
