The chief reason frequently alluded to by Viceroy and Secretary of State in their correspondence was first the prospect and tgen in May 1945 the reality of a victorious end to war in Europe. The pledges of post-war political advance which Sir Stafford Cripps had brought with him to India in March 1942 had been neither withdrawn nor replaced and remained to be redeemed.
