The Reader will find every Passage both in the Old Testament and the New except those of the Gospels which are at present the Subject of Debate and therefore must be determined by the meaning of the word Demon in other places He will find I say every passage considered in the following Papers; and the true Import of that Word is shewn not to be Evil Spirits or Devils but Ghosts or Souls of departed Men." The clergyman and controversialist Sykes ca. 1684-1756 had earlier in 1737 published his Enquiry into the meaning of demoniacks in the New Testament. By T.P.A.P.O.A.B.I.T.C.O.S. and launched the far-ranging contemporary gospel demoniac controversy of which this is an early entry answering the critic Leonard Twells. Sykes seems also to have suggested that the Gadarene incident might be best explained by illness or physical infirmity opening the way toward a model of mental illness as an explanation of so-called possession. Early references all seem to assign responsibility to Sykes for this Further Enquiry see the 1882 BMC and Notes & Queries Ser. 4 VI July 23 1870 though ESTC seems to take no stand. C. with extensive accounts here taken from the spirit realm and relayed through mediums from such figures as Humphry Davy Benjamin Franklin both Kane and Sir John Franklin and several instances of verse from the departed Edgar Allan Poe. The genealogical details given in the text included as bona fides for the mediums Smith has worked with point to this Francis H. The burden of each short piece would tend to uphold Davis's spiritualist-inspired anti-Christian viewpoint: Durais engages in modern textual analysis to suggest that the Noah story as retold in Genesis is composed of two sources or versions with the occasional contradiction: "The reader is at liberty to make his election as to which to believe. The Bible generously offers him two Floods to satisfy his faith." The latter piece casts the ministry of Jesus Christ without mentioning him by name as a myth or fable. OCLC notes only copies held at the British Library the source of the digitized Google Books copy; no authors under the name Durais found in the NUC nor does the CCFr suggest any obvious conjunctions between a Durais and the title word Sphinx or indeed an obvious candidate for Durais as an author at all. The only other work easily found under the name of Durais is the kindred title in English published by Bela Marsh in Boston the same year Thirty-two wonders or the skill displayed in the Miracles of Jesus the skills "meaning not thereby to indicate the skill of Jesus but of the Evangelists in inventing miracles that would suit the religious tastes of those for whom they wrote." Translation of Kerner's most celebrated work Die Seherin von Prevorst first published in Stuttgart in 1829. This account of spirit-communication and somnabulism was based upon Kerner's real-world encounters with Friederike Hauffe a gamekeeper's daughter who became a regular visitor to the Kerner house at Schloss Weibertreu prior to her death in 1929. Among Kerner's other close associates at this time was George Rapp founder of the Harmony Society in Western Pennsylvania and the work became an influential text within the Rappite community where Hauffe's spiritual pronouncements were taken as a gospel confirmation of their millenialist views. First translated and published in English in 1845; based on OCLC data this 1859 edition was the last to appear. Earlier editions included a folding chart not called for in this edition.
