‎Inclusion and Exclusion in Mediterranean Christianities, 400-800‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, vii + 293 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581132.‎

‎Summary The fifth to the ninth centuries were a formative period around the Mediterranean, in which new forces were redefining traditional social divisions. This volume will look at these centuries through the lens of inclusion and exclusion as social forces at work on the self, the community, and society as a whole. For late antique and early medieval societies, inclusion and exclusion were the means of redrawing the boundaries of cultural and political discourse, and ultimately, of deciding how resources - material, spiritual, and intellectual - were allocated. This is the first of two volumes to explore inclusion and exclusion as processes affecting Mediterranean communities. Contributions to the present volume look at how distinctions were fostered through both space and text, along ethnic and religious lines, and at the level of both ecumenical councils and individual friendships. By examining a wide range of social and cultural phenomena, from historiography and political partisanship to private religious worship and the performance of the feast, the chapters of this volume illustrate the exceptional range of ways that late antique and early medieval people negotiated their place in a changing world, and brought a new one into being. ‎YOUSUF SHAWKI EFENDI [YUSUF SEVKI EFENDI], (1840-1903).‎

‎[BULAQ PRINTING] Hadiyyat al-zâqirîn wa hujjet al-saliqîn.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary quarter cloth bdg. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 13,5 cm). In Arabic. 60 p. Yusuf Sevki Efendi is the caliph of Ahmed Ziyaeddin Gümüshanevi (d.1311 / 1893) from the Naqshibandiyya al-Khalidiyya sect. The only known work of Yusuf Sevki Efendi is "Hediyyetü'l Zakirin and huccetü's-salikin", which was printed in Egypt. The author states that at the end of the treatise, he finished the writing of the work on 12 Zilkade 1301/3 September 1884. Since it is known that he was sent to Egypt by Sultan Abdulhamid to suppress "Ramuzu'l-Ehadis, it is possible that he also published his own work in the same period (Bulaq, 1303/1885). It is a detailed book containing the provisions and manners related to the Naqshbandi order. Among the works benefited by the author who cites a wide range of sources, which are included "sahih" of Bukhari and Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Nasai's "Sünen", "Kutub-i Tis'a", and Imam Maliq's "Muwatta". In addition, Suyuti's "Camiu's-sagir", Tabari's "Mucemü'l-evsat", Münavî's "Feyzü 'l-kadir", and Beyhaki's "Shuabü'l-iman" are among his hadith sources. Not in OCLC.‎

‎Homiliary of Paul the Deacon. Religious and Cultural Reform in Carolingian Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 339 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 3 col., 13 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503577913.‎

‎Summary As one of the most widely used products of Charlemagne's religious and cultural reforms, the homiliary of Paul the Deacon is a unique monument in the history of Western Europe. Completed around AD 797, this collection of patristic homilies and sermons shaped the religious faith and liturgical practices of the churches in Carolingian Europe and those of countless other churches over the course of a millennium of use. Until now, scholarly study of the homiliary has rested on seven partial witnesses to the collection. This study, however, draws on over 80 newly identified witnesses from the Carolingian period, while providing a brief guide and handlist to hundreds of later manuscripts. It replaces the current scholarly reconstruction of the homiliary, discusses the significance of the collection's liturgical structure and provisions, and considers the composition of the homiliary in the context of Charlemagne's reforms and Paul's patron-client relationships. The study also brings together evidence for the production and use of this text in thirty-three Carolingian monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. The book then addresses the homiliary's theological character: the contents of the homiliary reflected a concern for expressing and defending orthodox doctrine at Charlemagne's court against Trinitarian and Christological heresies, as well as an urgent attention to moral reform in the light of a belief in the imminence of divine judgement. Finally, the study demonstrates the varied uses of Paul's collection and its historical legacy.
