‎2 autograph letters and one autograph lettercard signed "A. Antoine". Paris and Brest, 3 Jan. 1901, 18 Sept. 1903 [postmark], and 20 Aug. 1936 [postmark].‎

‎8vo and 12mo. Together 3 pp. With an autograph envelope. The earliest letter from 3 January 1901, on beautiful art nouveau stationery of the "Théatre Antoine", was to convey New Year's wishes to an unnamed "confrère" who had been present at a banquet that Antoine did not attend: "Nous avons renoncé à ce banquet; c'était beaucoup trop... mais j'ai vu votre aimable adhésion et je tiens à venir vous en remercier en vous présentant mes meilleurs vœux pour l'année qui s'ouvre". - On 18 September 1903, Antoine wrote Léon Marx, director of the Théâtre de Cluny, asking him for a box seat for a representation of Georges Courteline's "Bourbouroche" that same evening: "Je rentre et je me fais une fête d'aller voir notre Boubouroche ce soir. Est-il indiscret de vous demander une baignoire - Si oui, je la paierai et vous seriez bien aimable de me la faire réserver au contrôle". - The final letter, from a late period of Antoine's life, is addressed to Pierre Mortier, publisher of the weekly news magazine "Le Monde Illustré", wherein Antoine published criticisms. The letter suggests that there was an interruption for his "cronique" in the magazin, which might have been in connection with the Spanish Civil War that had started in July 1936. Antoine remarks that much would have been left to say "without taking sides yet" and refers to a Bidon, possibly the Spanish poet Luis Cernuda Bidón, who was "less prudent" and "went to war", closing with a possible reference to the conservative journalist Pierre Brisson: "Ma cronique chez vous m'a manqué ces jours-ci avec ces histoires du français. Il y avait tant de chose à dire sans prendre encore parti car il faut attendre les résultats de cette expérience - Bidon, moins prudent n'a pas hésité à partir en Guerre et j'attends le Brisson". - Well preserved.‎

Celui-ci sur vélin, non numéroté. Très bel exemplaire, très bien relié. L'intérieur est uniformément bruni, cependant.‎

Some creasing to corners and marking to rear wrapper. Internally bright save a little foxing and rusting on the staple. With an ALS requesting Henry Williamson contribute to a future issue of the magazine: A plain headed postcard from travel writer and country walk enthusiast S. P. B. Mais. Vol 2. 10pp. Original hand printed bifold staple-bound pamphlet printed in blue and black on handmade paper. All edges uncut. Internally bright save a little foxing and rusting on the staple. With one manuscript note on Apollo Arts Club headed paper from Higgens enclosing a photograph of the hand printing press and the new this issue of the Delphic and chasing up a possible future contribution to the publication. Issue includes a note on bookplates and woodcutting as well as a poem by Kathleen Moore. From the family library of Henry Williamson recently dispersed. The Delphic journal of the Apollo Arts Club based in Sussex saw its first issue come to fruition on an English oak hand printing press in June 1929 'the whole procedure closely following that of Caxton and other early printers' Delphic no. 2. The issue includes contemporary woodcuts and poetry alongside information on organised country walks and local artistic pursuits. Loosely inserted are a plain postcard from travel writer and country walk enthusiast S. P. B. Mais then of Sussex requesting a piece by Henry Williamson on Shoreham Harbour and a further short letter from G. M. E. Higgens honourable secretary of the Apollo Arts Club following up on the postcard specifying both gratitude and a word count. This apparently short-lived interwar journal has since sunk without trace and is unrecorded in COPAC and OCLC. Henry Williamson 1895-1977 novelist and writer on natural history and the English countryside is predominantly remembered as the author of Tarka the Otter 1927 for which he won the Hawthornden Prize. His wartime experiences on the Western Front having altered his life inexorably he spent the remainder of his post-war life in Devon Norfolk and Suffolk writing naturalistic novels very much in the romantic tradition. . ‎Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erfuhr Appenzeller bei Wilhelm Hummel (1872-1939) in Zürich, sowie an der Akademie in München bei Angelo Jank (1868-1940). Zu seinem Bekanntenkreis gehörten die Maler Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) und Otto Vautier (1853-1919) und fühlte sich besonders zur französischen Malerei hingezogen. 1911 arbeitete er in Genf, wo er zwischen 1912 und 1924 ein Atelier besaß. 1918 gab er die Graphikmappe ?Douze Estampes? heraus, 1923 das ?Album de lithographies?. Mit Maurice Barraud (1899-1954) unternahm er 1924 eine Reise nach Spanien und ließ sich noch im selben Jahr in Paris nieder, wo er sich 1925 sein Atelier einrichtete. Er stellte oft im Salon aus und lernte so zahlreiche Malerkollegen kennen u. a. auch Claude Monet (1840-1926). Sein Landhaus in Buchillon bei Morges, das er 1927 gekauft hatte, wurde zum Treffpunkt seiner Genfer Freunde. Hier entstanden zahlreiche Landschaftsbilder. Zwischen 1912 und 1931 stellte der Künstler mehrmals auf der Nationalen Schweizerischen Kunstausstellung und zweimal im Kunsthaus Zürich aus. Während seiner Pariser Zeit zog es ihn immer wieder aufs Land hinaus. In Coutances, im Département Marche in der Normandie entstanden künstlerisch wertvolle Holzschnitte. In Neauphe-le-Vieux (Seine et Oise) kaufte er 1936 das Châteua de l?Abbaye, eine Villa, in der früher einmal Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) gelebt hatte. Aus finanziellen Gründen musste er sich davon aber wieder trennen. 1938 hatte er Marguerite Davesna-de-Cussy geheiratet und lebte bis 1954 in Paris. Dann zog er in seine Vaterstadt zurück, wo er bis zu seinem Tod ansässig war.‎
