Manuscript Letter written for publication in a 'valuable periodical' signed by 'Uno dell'Antica Scuola' containing 'observations' for 'students of the Vocal Art'. 'The art of Vocalization' with especial reference to Italian opera.
Undated. England 1880s. 4to 4 pp. Bifolium. 87 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair on aged paper with wear to extremities and a spike hole to one corner. Written in ink in a Victorian hand and with three changes in pencil. Docketed at head 'The art of Vocalization'. Towards beginning writes that the subject is one which he has 'studied many years in close connexion with the most eminent Masters of Italy most of whom I may rank among my personal friends and the pith of whose conversations added to my own experience I propose embodying in a few short essays upon the Formation of the Voice'. Gives 'the advice of a tenor singer of some renown in Otello &c literally as I heard it spoken to a student - the author died two years ago at Milan' beginning: 'I know but little of music - in comparison to me you are a professor - my voice was by nature imperfect - my figure is diminutive - yet I have been 1st tenor of some of the best Theatres and with success - mark me if you want to sing .'. Exemplaire non coupé, avec petit manque de papier au bord d'une page. Complet de la superbe jaquette illustrée par René Brantonne, sans restaurations au verso. Traduit de l'anglais par Denise Clairouin. Préface de Daniel Halévy. Superbe état général. Edition originale, rare dans un tel état de fraicheur. Le roman fut d'abord adapté au théatre en 1927, sous le titre Porgy & Bess, puis en opéra en 1935. L'auteur et son épouse Dorothy en rédigèrent le livret et George Gershwin en composa la musique. En 1959, Otto Preminger, adapta l'opéra en un film musical, avec dans les rôles principaux, Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Pearl Bailey, Brock Peters, Diahann Carroll, Ruth Attaway. Ces trois œuvres traitent de la vie des Afro-Américains dans le quartier fictif de Catfish Row à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud, au début des années 1930, à travers l'histoire de Porgy, un mendiant noir estropié vivant dans les taudis de Charleston, en Caroline du Sud, qui tente de sauver Bess des griffes de Crown, son concubin, et de Sportin’Life, qui veut la prostituer.

75pp G/none rebound in stiff carton wrappers, leather inset with gilt lettering on front, spine torn with partial loss, preliminary page stained in few areas and minute loss of lower corner but very good internally, clean and tight. Rare work in French surveying the opinion of the Press shortly after the premiere of Rossini's Stabat Mater took place in Paris. Rare first original edition, not a modern reprint. The work was published a year later in Italian by Ricordi. rilegatura in cartone con dorso lacerato con mancanze, tassello in pelle con scritte dorate applicato al piatto anteriore, pagina preliminare sporca con piccola mancanza all'angolo inferiore, in condizioni piu' che buone internamente, fresco e pulito. Raro libretto in francese con una rassegna degli articoli a stampa apparsi intorno allo Stabat Mater di Rossini, a seguito della prima a Parigi. Rara prima edizione originale, non una ristampa moderna. Il lavoro fu pubblicato in italiano da Ricordi un anno dopo.

Faint bit of mustiness but very good.The Original Ballet Russe originally named Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo was a ballet company established in 1931 by René Blum and Colonel Wassily de Basil as a successor to the Ballets Russes founded in 1909 by Sergei Diaghilev. The company assumed the new name Original Ballet Russe after a split between de Basil and Blum. De Basil led the renamed company while Blum and others founded a new company under the name Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. It was a large scale professional ballet company which toured extensively in Europe Australia and New Zealand the United States and Central and South America. It closed down operations in 1947. They were managed n the later years by Sol Hurok From the 1941 program; Today "S. Hurok presents" has become the hallmark of excellence. Firenze, nella Stamperia di F. Giachetti, presso il Teatro Nuovo, 1836, in-16, cartoncino editoriale con cornice tipografica in xilografia ai piatti, pp. 34, (2). Fregio inciso al frontespizio. I nomi degli autori sono in fine all'elenco degli interpreti (pagina 3) fra cui citiamo quello del tenore fiorentino Napoleone Moriani (1808-1878). L'organico orchestrale (18 elementi + 30 scelti professori della città e forestieri) è diretto dal 1° violino Gaetano Bruscagli (pag. 4). Buone condizioni, salvo blanda gora. Questa all'Alfieri è la 1a esecuzione italiana: il Teatro nuovo era quello sorto al posto del Teatro S. Maria commissionato nel 1740 dall' Accademia dei Risoluti; posto fra via Pietrapiana e Via dell'Ulivo, fu rinnovato e ampliato da L. Sgrilli e poi da V. Bellini nel 1815 e nel 1828 quando fu intitolato a Vittorio Alfieri. Demolito nel 1934-36 per far posto al Palazzo delle Poste e rinato come Spazio Alfieri nel 2013.

Al frontespizio impresa dell'Accademia degli Immobili (mulino; motto: "in sua movenza è fermo") in xilografia. A pagina 2 elencati nomi degli interpreti e del compositore; alle pp. 3 e 4: elenco dei primi e secondi ballerini (con 16 di concerto e 90 comparse) diretti da Antonio Cortesi, ed elenco dei 20 orchestrali diretti da Niccola Petrini Zamboni, mentre è direttore d'Opera il senese Andrea Nencini, che a Firenze insegnò contrappunto alla scuola dell'Accademia di Belle Arti e fu maestro di cappella nella chiesa dei SS. Michele e Gaetano. E' questa una delle 3 opere di Donizetti tratte dalla storia romana: nel ruolo del Senatore Murena il basso baritono parmense Domenico Cosselli, specializzato nel repertorio rossiniano ma abile anche nel romantico; nel ruolo della figlia Argelia, la bolognese Clementina Fanti soprano "di bella presenza, educata al bel canto italiano ed attrice perfetta". Ottime condizioni.

ORIGINAL INVITATION to the special GALA SOIREE performance of the OPERA DE MONTE-CARLO celebrating the FETE NATIONAL on November 19 1976 issued to the French Opera manager HUGUES GALL head of the Grand Theatre de Geneve and the Paris Opera. Together with: THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM for the official public premiere of the "Gala Choregraphique" performed the following day.
<p>Monte-Carlo Comite de Gestion de l'Orchestre National de l'Opera de Monte-Carlo 1976. 1976. Fine. - An original invitation from the Palais de Monaco printed on 9-3/8 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide glossy card stock with an integral attached blank leaf with the country's seal at the head. Mostly printed with "Monsieur et Madame Hugues Gall" and "ils seront" invites penned in ink. The invitation to the gala held at the Opera de Monte-Carlo on the occasion of the Fete Nationale is to be held on Friday November 19th 1976 "Par ordre de Leurs Altesses Serenissimes l'Aide de Camp a l'honneur d'informer Monsieur et Madame Hugues Gall qu'ils seront invites a la soiree de gala. en l'honneuyr de Leurs Altesses Serenissimes le Prince Rainier III et la Princesse de Monaco." The invitation is accompanied by the program for the Opera de Monte-Carlo November 20 1976 gala choregraphique. The 10-5/8 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide program is bound in stiff cream wraps titled in gilt with a color illustration mounted on the front cover. The 8-page program includes performances of "Le Pecheur et son Ame / creation mondiale avec Tetsutaro Shimizu Yoko Morishita Egon Madsen et le Ballet de l'Opera de Monte-Carlo" and "Les Grands pas de Deux avec par ordre alphabetique Richard Cragun - Michael Denard - Marcia Haydee - Egon Madsen - Yoko Morishita - Merle Park - Tetsutaro Shimizu - Ghislaine Thesmar - Helgi Tomasson" as well as short extracts from other works. Near fine.</p><p>The National Day of Monaco was first celebrated on November 19th 1952 by decree of Prince Rainier III. The day is marked every year by celebration music and festivals etc.</p><p>The French opera manager Hugues Gall 1940-2024 was head of the Grand Theatre de Geneve and the Paris Opera. Programma di sala con note illustrative di Rodolfo Paoli. Traduzione in francese, inglese, tedesco. Questa opera, in cui Pier Luigi Pizzi si fece notare come scenografo per "la leggera, colta eleganza" (Marina Henderson) segna il suo esordio nel mondo dell'opera barocca; bisognerà attendere però il 1978, colla messa in scena dell'Orlando furioso vivaldiano a Verona, perché Pizzi diventi un interprete di punta della "Belcanto-Renaissance", curando regie liriche di opere di Vivaldi, Haendel, ma soprattutto Rossini. Ottime condizioni.
