L'opera svelata. Trattato tecnico e pratico di retorica musicale nel melodramma italiano dell'800
brossura La musicologia nega l'esistenza della retorica musicale dalla fine del '700: essa avrebbe soffocato la libertà espressiva dell'artista romantico. Al contrario, "L'opera svelata" dimostra la sua radicale presenza, persino aggiornata, nelle partiture del melodramma italiano dell'800. Proprio questi aggiornamenti rendono più realistica la partitura: esiste un profondo rapporto di similitudine tra le intonazioni del parlato quotidiano e quelle previste da tali partiture. Ciò si manifesta perché sia il compositore che l'individuo parlante selezionano, anche inconsciamente, il suono più efficace per la comunicazione. Anche la Programmazione Neuro-linguistica conferma che, quando si parla, solo l'8% della comunicazione è veicolato dalla parola, il restante 92% dal non verbale, in particolare dal suono. E la musica è appunto l'arte dei suoni. Il manuale di retorica presente nel volume è una guida di analisi musicale e composizione per chi vuole capire e interpretare meglio le partiture e per chi vuole musicare un testo con efficacia.

Program 6 ½ x 5 inches 32 pp. including covers for the San Francisco Opera Company touring production of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" the "Spectacular Military Comic Opera in Two Acts" by Stanislus Stange and Julian Edwards. Featured in the cast were Aida Hemmi Lillian Raymond Aimee Leicester and George Kunkel. Very good clean condition with an intriguing array of vintage advertising filling most of the program’s pages. Featured advertising includes the upcoming five-act Sardou drama "The Sorceress" on tour with Nance O’Neill. It appears that linked to this Charles Frohman touring production is a "pop-up" store operated by Mrs. Frohman who it is stated has recently "returned from Japan and China" with a quantity of Orientalia. Mrs. Frohman operating out of Parlor C. in the Portland Hotel was flogging Asian antiques jade silver carved furniture dresses gowns kimonos etc. Another ad announces the services of Prof. E. Khimo the "Hindoo Psychic" while yet another full page rear cover touts the "Breakers Hotel" on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula newly opened after a fire which burned the original structure to the ground. Perhaps the most interesting advertisement is for a stock offering for the "Chicago-New York Electric Air Line Railroad" an envisioned new route between the two cities that would cut 150 miles off the existing routes. With grades not exceeding 1% and speeds up to 100 mph travel time would be reduced to 10 hours. The planned road was a failure with less than 20 miles of operational roadway constructed--in Indiana.
