MURAT KATOGLU, ASLI AYHAN.
[Opera-ballet posters and prints] Operanin Türkiye'deki hikayesi: Opera-bale afisleri, 1941-2011.
New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 441 p., fully color ills. Operanin Türkiye'deki hikayesi: Opera-bale afisleri, 1941-2011. Opera-ballet posters and prints. "From the perspective of our country's prestige opera and ballet are as important as theatre and cinema. In comparison with other spheres of cultural life we have a strong sense of pride in our music and performing arts which were discovered by us much earlier than in any other country of the Middle East or Far East. A nice proof of this can be found in the presented literary work, which introduces us to the detailed study carried out throughout the years by Murat Katoglu and Asli Ayhan. This substantial piece of art, which can be characterized as a brief visual history of the opera and ballet in Turkey, demonstrates the development process we got through not only in the music and performing arts, but also in the graphic arts.".

Murray, Peter
Homesteads and Snug Harbours : The Gulf Islands
213 pages including index and references. "The lovely Gulf Islands of the BC coast have captivated visitors and settlers for almost 150 years. Their tranquil present belies a turbulent past - the pioneers faced cattle rustlers, Indian battles, political upheavals and opium smugglers, but they were still attracted by the islands' independent lifestyle. Everybody worked hard, but they enjoyed themselves too, with tennis parties, picnics and dances that went on till dawn, so the guests could row home safely in daylight. Each island has a different story: Salt Spring exported apples before the Okanagan, Texada boasted an elegant opera house, Lasqueti sheltered notorious robbers, Mayne was known as "Little Hell" for its boisterous pubs. This colourful past is brought together in this volume." - from back cover. Gift greetings inside front cover else clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Sound copy. Book

Music / Opera. Stevens Rise b . 1913
PUBLICITY PHOTOGRAPH
New York City: Metropolitan Opera Co. INSCRIBED by Ms Stevens. Faint dimple in lower left corner. Very Good. 9-7/8" x 8" <br/><br/>"One of the great voices of the Metropolitan Opera New York-born mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens made her debut with the company in 1939 as Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier". Her other notable roles in 21 years with the company included the two characterizations most associated with her the title role in Bizet's "Carmen" and Dalila in Saint-Saens's "Samson et Dalila." Furthermore Ms Stevens is known for literally saving the entire 1961 season. After the company had canceled its entire 1961-62 schedule due to stalled labor negotiations a persuasive telegram from Rise Stevens convinced President Kennedy to intervene and he ordered the Secretary of Labor to arbitrate the dispute. Just three weeks later the entire season was reinstated on schedule demonstrating notables such as President Kennedy were not immune to the entreaties of the Met's attractive reigning mezzo-soprano. A great beauty as well as a great singer she also enjoyed one of the more successful careers of the many opera singers who made films most notably in "The Chocolate Soldier" opposite Nelson Eddy and "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby & Barry Fitzgerald. She was also something of a fixture on early TV appearing frequently on such programs as "The Bell Telephone Hour" & "The Voice of Firestone" where she sang both operatic arias & popular songs. She also appeared on one of the first telecasts from the Met in 1954 singing her favored role of Carmen opposite one of her most frequent Don Joses Richard Tucker." IMDb.
