New York: October 14 1980. 1980. Very good. - sc Quarto 11 inches high by 8-3/8 inches high. 201 words typed on a sheet of cream paper with her address typed at the top. Signed "Constance DeJong". The left edge of the paper is darkened & there is a light paper-clip mark to the top left corner with a small light stain just below the body of the letter. Very good. <p>DeJong writes to Gary Wilkie of Contexts in Seattle to ask if she could present her new work there as part of a tour that will take her to Portland Oregon. She encloses a photo and resume: "It's not very up to date in terms of the new work I'd be presenting or the recently completed book and opera I wrote with Philip Glass." A publicity sheet from Art Performances New York states: "Constance DeJong is one of the young post-modern writers who has made performance a natural extension of her work as a writer. By blending some of the traditional techniques of theatre - lighting movement music - performances extend her work beyond the written word into an almost tactile presence a context where the narrative can come to life. Large Album of Autographs Collected at the Metropolitan Opera 1940's
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A large and beautifully composed album with 26 pages of autographs of opera singers conductors and other musicians including Marian Anderson Salvatore Baccaloni and Jussi Björling collected in the late 1940's at the Metropolitan Opera. Each page has been carefully arranged with the name of the artist printed in white on black paper a clipped signature a clipped portrait and in many cases a Polaroid of the artist on the evening of the performance. Many of the signatures are dated and the roles played are indicated. Unfortunately several of the signatures have been traced over in pen see below. Included are 10 further loose clipped signatures two further clipped portraits 4 excellent candid Polaroids of stars and a concert program. In a large embossed cream faux-leather photograph album bound with a cord in very fine condition. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. AMQS of four measures from the aria "Si les filles d'Arles sont reines" from Gounod's opera "Mireille" signed by one of the great stars of the English and world opera and concert stages for more than half a century beginning in 1857. He was closely identified with the title role in Mendelssohn's Elijah which he first performed in 1858. Santley whose sister Kate Santley was herself a musical and comedy star wrote four books two of them autobiographical. In 1907 he became the first singer to be knighted.<br><br />Neatly penned in blue ink on a slip printed with a quotation from Shakespeare. Impressive collection of AMQS and inscriptions addressed to the celebrated soprano Delphine Ugalde on both sides of a large album leaf measuring 31.5 x 23.5 cm 12.5 x 9.5 inches. Fine. <br><br />The recto with: eight measures written and signed by the French composer Charles Lecocq from his wildly successful "La fille de Madame Angot" which when premiered in Paris in 1873 was performed for more than 400 nights consecutively. Inscribed to Ugalde and dated 20 May 1873; an unidentified inscription; a heartfelt inscription from Rossini's friend and biographer Alexis Azevedo dated 17 July 1870. <br><br />The verso with: a three-measure 1869 quotation by Fauré celebrated French baritone and composer creator of important roles by Massé Thomas Meyerbeer Verdi and others who has penned a selection from his own Sacred Song for Voice and Piano "Les Rameaux" with a trimmed albumen photograph of him affixed beneath; a heartfelt 1869 inscription by Capoul the great French tenor creator of Offenbach's Vert-Vert and Masse's Paul et Virginie who writes that he is "so happy of your return to us that I embrace you as strongly as I admire you"; an 1870 inscription from Dejazet important French actress who writes that her "voice remains always charming even when it is speaking it is your great heart which sings" and with a trimmed albumen photograph of her affixed beneath; with one additional unidentifed inscription lower left dated 1873. <br><br />Ugalde "studied in Paris with Cinti-Damoreau and made her début in 1848 at the Opéra-Comique as Angèle in Auber's Le domino noir a role created by her teacher. In 1851 she sang at Her Majesty's Theatre London as Delilah in Auber's L'enfant prodigue. In 1858 she sang Leonora Il trovatore at the Paris Opéra and was then engaged at the Théâtre Lyrique. Good. - Seventeen words penned on the lower half of 6 inch high by 4-1/8 inch wide cream paper: "Such persuasive 'autograph friends' are certainly hard to resist - so I send you the signature with pleasure". Signed "Emma Juch". Across the top of the page is this second autograph likely that to which she refers as it boldly fills the width of the page and is dated by her beneath the signature: "Emma Juch / New York June 30th 1886". Folded for mailing with offsetting to the corners. Likely once mounted in an album a paper tab is affixed to the lower edge of the verso. <p>The Operatic soprano Emma Juch 1861-1939 Emma Antonia Juch Wellman was born in Vienna and raised in New York City. Emma Juch took singing lessons and practiced secretly as her father did not approve. It wasn't until he first heard her sing on stage that he had a change of heart. Her debut came as Philine in an Italian version of Ambroise Thomas' "Mignon" at 18 years of age and she was immediately hired to sing for the season at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. She made her American debut at NYC's Academy of Music in 1881 and in 1886 was the first singer contracted by the American Opera Company. Soon after that company folded she formed the Emma Juch Company. The company opened with "Faust" at the Grand Opera House in Los Angeles in 1890 and went on to tour the US and Mexico. Her singing career spanned but a mere 13 years as she retired after marrying the New York lawyer Francis L. Wellman in 1894. New York June 30th, 1886. unknown

Very good. - Sepia-toned cabinet photograph by Conly 5-1/2 inches high by 3-7/8 inches wide mounted on a card 6-1/2 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide with the cast and credits of "Prince Kam; or A Trip to Venus" printed on the verso Signed "Sincerely yours / Camille D'Arville" below the photo. There is some very light foxing & soiling to the verso. Very good. <p>The copy on the verso of the photograph states that this card is a souvenir of the 75th performance at the Park Theatre Boston of Rice's comic opera 'Venus' with libretto by Charles Alfred Byrne and Louis Harrison and music by Gustave Kerker. As the star Camille D'Arville is listed separately at the foot of the cast list. She plays Prince Kam son and heir of Poom the Grand Llama of Thibet. The photo is a head-and-shoulders portrait of a distinctly womanly D'Arville wearing an embroidered cap on her mop of short curly hair and a doublet with puffed sleeves elaborately jeweled around the collar.<p>Born Neeltye Dykstra in the Netherlands Camille D'Arville studied music in Amsterdam and made her debut there in concert in 1877. She appeared in London toured the English provinces and came to the United States in 1888 under the management of J. F. Duff.<p>The photographer Charles F. The operas include Fidelio Don Juan Les Noces de Figaro La Tosca La Servante Maitresse L'Enlevement au Serail Tristan & Iseult Le Chevalier a la Rose and La Valkyrie. The text is in French.<p>The Austrian conductor Franz Schalk 1863-1931 who was the director of the Vienna State Opera is best known for his revisions of Bruckner's symphonies.
