"Entre guide touristique et souvenirs d’arbitrage, cette première et seule autobiographie d’un arbitre de football nous fait traverser l’Europe et le monde de la première moitié du vingtième siècle. John Langenus, qui a dirigé 81 rencontres internationales dirigées, relate ses souvenirs d’homme en noir depuis ses débuts dans l’arbitrage jusqu’à la finale de Montevidéo. Après quelques pages sur ses débuts dans le plat pays, il relate son expérience internationale. Au début de l’année 1936, John Langenus évoque un match Espagne–Allemagne qu’il devait diriger à Barcelone quelques mois avant la guerre civile (on ne devait jouer que l’hymne espagnol, il évoque les joueurs allemands qui « saluèrent à leur manière »). C’est aussi l’époque où le football, en Europe centrale est comparé à une « Existenkampf » (lutte pour l’existence), période où « le public finit par croire que l’existence même des nations dépendait du succès de l’équipe nationale ». Ou encore le match Italie-France qu’il eut à arbitrer quelques jours après que le Grand Conseil Fasciste de 1938 ait évoqué l’avenir qu’il entendait donner à la Corse et à Nice. L’arbitrage lui a notamment permis de voyager à travers le monde, de rencontrer les grands de l’époque : Mussolini à Rome, le roi Léopold XIII, le roi Alphonse XIII et Primo de Rivera à Barcelone, Dolfuss à Vienne… Son témoignage nous permet de mieux comprendre l’atmosphère footballistique de l’époque, lui-même relatant que : « L’Angleterre a longtemps tardé à éprouver une estime quelconque pour le football continental et à réclamer pour lui l’intérêt de son public habituel ». Mais surtout on découvre un esprit du sport quelque peu oublié où Roumains, Belges, Yougoslaves et Français s’embarquent entre « joyeux » amis pour une traversée transatlantique de 14 jours en direction de l’Uruguay. La fin du livre constitue un moment fort avec l’évocation de la finale de la première coupe du monde à Montevidéo, dans le « Estadio del Centenario », stade de 125 000 places, qui n’était pas encore fini quand la compétition commença. John Langenus insiste aussi sur la difficulté pour les arbitres de différents continents d’appliquer des règles qui n’étaient pas encore bien définies, car « c’est connu qu’en Europe même tous les pays ne suivaient pas les mêmes règles du jeu ». Il revient ensuite sur un moment cocasse, lorsque les capitaines argentins et uruguayens, à l’entrée sur l’aire de jeu lors de la finale, voulurent jouer avec leur propre ballon et non celui de l’adversaire. Cette autobiographie évoque aussi le problème déjà réel de la sécurité des arbitres. En effet, si John Langenus a eu des débuts difficiles dans les provinces belges (il fut frappé à plusieurs reprises), il revient sur ce problème lors de la finale de la Coupe du monde où les dirigeants européens ne l’autorisèrent à arbitrer qu’à midi seulement, après avoir obtenu les garanties nécessaires au maintien de l’ordre et à la sécurité nécessaire de l’arbitre. On peut lire aussi que la sortie du stade de l’arbitre après la finale se fit sous protection policière. Or, cette escorte n’avait pour seul but que de permettre à l’arbitre belge de pouvoir embarquer à l’heure sur le bateau du retour vers l’Europe. Il est d’ailleurs intéressant de noter que John Langenus n’avait accepté de diriger la finale qui si le départ du bateau, prévu à 15 h, était reporté de deux heures, ce qu’on lui avait accordé. Cette autobiographie s’apparente à un voyage initiatique dans le football des années trente, où le rythme d’écriture est parfois proche de celui des trains qui transportent l’arbitre Langenus d’un stade à l’autre."
