‎Eight Manuscripts from the Sammlung Ludwig the property of the J. Paul Getty Museum to be sold as lots 32 to 39 in the sale of Western Manuscripts and Miniatures Sotheby's London on Tuesday 6 December 1988. Sotheby's auction catalogue for part of sale date; 6 December 1988‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue 1988. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 41-88 pp plates some in colour. Lots 32-39. A separate catalogue for the eight extremely important early manuscripts included in the sale "The following eight lots are the property of the J.Paul Getty Museum in Malibu. Half of them are earlier than the mid-ninth century. They form a small part of the great Sammlung Ludwig the most outstanding library of medieval manuscripts assembled in the last half century. The collection was formed mostly through the agency of Mr. H.P. Kraus by Dr.Peter Ludwig of Aachen and was at one time on deposit at the Schntgen-Museum in Cologne. In early 1983 the entire Ludwig manuscript collection comprising nearly 150 items was sold en bloc to the Getty Museum . The lots are described in the order of their listing in Anton von Euw and Joachim M. Plotzek Die Handschriften der Sammlung Ludwig I-V Cologne 1979-1985. They begin with primitive fragments of a Theodulf Bible and of St.Aldhelm. Two outstanding secular manuscripts of the ninth century follow from the two great centres of Carolingian learning the schools of Auxerre and Laon. Both are illustrated with many schematic diagrams and are in almost perfect condition. The next lot is an Ottoman Macrobius with a world map and two further maps follow - an extremely rare fifteenth-century portolan and an entire renaissance atlas. The group concludes with the oldest manuscript to come for sale in over fifty years the celebrated Canons from the Phillipps and Bodmer libraries of the third quarter of the eighth century. Very Good. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue, 1988 unknown‎

‎The Lyttelton Papers: The Property of the Viscount Cobham. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 12 December 1978‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 12th December 1978. Printed boards small 4to. 196 pp colour frontispiece and several black-and-white plates. 181 lots. The first section comprises medieval charters including those of Halesowen Abbey and historical letters and documents running from the twelfth century to the Glorious Revolution. Among them are Royal Letters Patent of Kings John and Henry III each with magnificent impressions of the Great Seal of England and with rare examples of medieval seal bags and those granted by Philip and Mary Elizabeth I and James I embellished with initial letter portraits of the monarchs one of James I with the superb coloured portrait which is illustrated as the frontispiece. Poignancy at least is served by the touching autograph Memoriall of Elizabeth I by the documents signed by Robert Dudley and his ill-used spouse by Richard Duke of York and George Duke of Clarence and by the bill for a monument in Magdalen College Oxford by the celebrated sculptor Nicholas Stone erected to the memory of the brothers Lyttelton who died together by drowning. Standing on its own is the autograph manuscript of the greater part of the first history of Worcestershire. Thomas Habington its author and godson of Elizabeth I. was a neighbour of the Lytteltons and like members of that family was heavily implicated in the Gunpowder Plot. The remainder of the catalogue is arranged as the papers of individual members of the family in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Sons and grandsons natural and legitimate of Sir Thomas Lyttelton d. 1751. Those of William Henry known affectionately as 'Billy' or more formally as 'Governor' reflecting his successive employments as Governor of South Carolina and Jamaica include letter books of the greatest historical importance providing. ineer alia unpublished information about his dealings with the American Indians. The papers of Admiral Thomas Smith known as Tom of ten thousand the illegitimate son of Sir Thomas are a panorama otlife in the navy in the eighteenth century. Bachelor Dean Charles follows the unmarricd Admiral. The letters from Horace Walpole to him are charming; those to his brother more waspish. Mrs Montagu is revealed as his friend; to his brother she was the 'Madonna'. That brother George first Lord Lyttelton poet scholar and Chancellor of the Exchequer gathered round him a galaxy of literary and political stars: Boswell Johnson a letter about George though addressed to his brother Garrick Swift Voltaire Pope James Thomson the elder Pitt Pelham Newcastle Bolingbroke Chesterfield Rodney Shenstone and William Warburton. The fourth Baron's papers include letters by Dickens and Macready about prostitution in the theatre and by Carlyle about the choosing of the librarian of the London Library. His brother.in-law W. E. Gladstone appears in the unlikely guise of poet but also as letter-writer; Queen Victoria as mourner for Albert a subject she rarely touched upon in her letters. Newman on his conversion and Cobden on the Corn Laws are among other correspondents with Manning Macaulay Tennyson Trollope and Browning. Boards a little browned letter from the bookseller A.G. Thomas loosely laid in. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 12th December, 1978 hardcover‎

‎Silver and Enamel Bindings. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 10 May 1985‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 10th May 1985. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 102 pp. 58 lots. From the preface: "Bindings made of silver or precious metals have always been rare and rather unusual. Splendid examples survive from the mediaeval period on Missals and Manuscripts but most of these are now in public institutions or still in the religious houses for which they were made all beyond the reach of private collectors. From the second half of the sixteenth century onwards they became less rare and the present collection is composed of objects of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with one example from the sixteenth lot 6. There have been very few collections of such bindings and this is certainly the first time that a whole sale catalogue has been devoted to them. During the period covered by this collection the production of these bindings took place almost exclusively in Holland and Germany although there are also examples here from Italy lots 34 39 55 Scandinavia lots 18 19 44 56 Switzerland lots 30 47 57 Hungary lot 12 and Russia lot 58. There is one example from England a hornbook lot 38. In the seventeenth century the covers were mainly engraved often inspired by contemporary engravings by masters such as de Bry lot 48 Collaert lot 31 and others. Particularly some of the Dutch ones show engraving of high quality. In the eighteenth century methods somewhat changed and many bindings are more or less heavily embossed. Their size on the whole was small; the larger ones are rarer as they were normally produced for churches and many still remain there. The subjects shown are almost exclusively religious and many of the German books which have been placed in them are of a highly pietistic character and mostly Protestant the Roman Catholic ones being much less com mon. By the end of the eighteenth century silver bindings went out of fashion not appealing to the changing religious views of the nineteenth-century.Attention should perhaps be drawn even in this remarkable and unusual collection to a few particularly interesting bindings. There are two bindings of Hebrew interest an early one of the sixteenth century lot 6 and the nielloed silver binding lot 24 a piece of extraordinary rarity. Lot 39 is a magnificent Venetian binding embossed in high relief intended for a Commissione and conveying the splendour and pride of the city. There is magnificent German parcel- gilt binding enamelled in translucent blue formerly in the Rothschild collection lot 23 an exquisite German gold and mother-of-pearl cover of the eighteenth century lot 35 and a splendid large Russian eighteenth-century Gospel book in a Moscow binding elaborately constructed on two levels and with a long interesting note describing the making of the binding and its cost. This catalogue is the result of the combined work of the Book and Silver Departments but we think it should be emphasised that many of the descriptions were originally made by the late John Hayward of the Victoria and Albert Museum and later an Associate of our firm for many years. The Hayward numbers refer to his article on part of this collection in the Connoisseur October 1952. The majority of the bindings in this collection were formerly in the collection of Major J.R. Abbey and his accession numbers have been quoted. Top fore-edge corner of title-page cut away otherwise Very Good. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 10th May 1985 unknown‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 13th July 2000. Laminated wrappers 4to. 168 pp plates some colour ills. 276 lots. Among the highlights noted were the following: The archive of the philosopher and historian Sir James Mackintosh; A collection of letters and working filmscripts relating to Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove"; Illuminated pedigree presented by Robert Cooke to Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester; Important collection of family correspondence of Sir Laurence Olivier; Books and scripts of the actor Denholm Elliott; Papers of Guy Johnson Superintendant of Indian Affairs in New York in the War of Independence; Collections of first editions by Ian Fleming William Golding and Vladimir Nabokov; Fine collection of works by W.B Yeats some inscribed; Fine autograph letters signed by John Evelyn Joseph Addison James Boswell Samuel Johnson; Horace Walpole Charles Dickens C.S. Lewis Ted Hughes and others. From the introduction "The philosopher and historian Sir James Mackintosh 1765-1832.was one of the best known public figures of his age and his social circle in London included practically everyone of any intellectual distinction especially in the fields of literature and politics. A genial amiable and very eloquent man he was generally well liked but inevitably attracted some enmity. Among much else in these extensive and revealing papers it is interesting to see letters by the likes of S.T. Coleridge Samuel Parr William Godwin and James Mill sending him effusive expressions of admiration when he could be of service to them but expressing very different sentiments on other occasions usually behind his back. The papers throw extensive light on Mackintosh's own political and philosophical thinking as well as on his personal life. The correspondence involving so many of his contemporaries increases the significance ot the archive for the historian of intellectual life in general in this turbulent and revolutionary period. ‎The Fairfax Library and Archive Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 14 December 1993‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 14th December 1993. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. unpaginated approximately 400 pp plates ills. 541 lots. From the introduction: "The Fairfax collection of over 5000 pamphlets and tracts of the English Civil War is undoubtedly the most important and largest collection of such material ever to be offered for sale at auction. Never before in English history had the recording in print of political and military events and of all manner and shades of opinion been possible on such a scale and with such immediacy as in the Civil War: nothing it seems was said or done debated in Parliament or fought out with sword and cannon but that it was without delay committed to print. The Fairfax collection was largely put together over a period of forty years early this century by Albert Fairfax 1870-1939 who succeeded his father as the twelfth Baron Fairfax in 1900 and had returned to live and work in England from Virginia where the sixth Baron Fairfax had settled early in the eighteenth century. It was an act of family piety the main concern being to document the career of the great Parliamentary general Sir Thomas third Lord Fairfax 1612-1671 and of his father Ferdinando 1584-1647. But although accounts of individual battles and sieges form much of the core of the collection the scope was widened to include the political and religious background so that a whole panorama of the concerns and events of the years 1641 to 1649 unfolds itself. The collection was extended backwards to include certain material from the earlier years of the reign of Charles I and later to carry the story up to the Restoration. But it is for the years of the Civil War itself that the collection can take its place alongside the great holdings of Oxford and London. Top fore-edge corners of front wrapper title-page and next page cut away otherwise near Very Good contents a trifle age-toned. ‎The George Abrams Collection. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale dates : 16-17 November 1989.‎

‎Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 16th & 17th November 1989. Cloth paper cover illustration 4to 31 cm. unpaginated profusely illustrated including many coloured plates. 238 lots. It is remarkable that a collector of not excessive means should have been able over a relatively brief period to have formed so fine and wide-ranging a collection of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century printed books including so many volumes that from general freshness of condition and from quality of rubrication and decoration would stand out in any of the world's major collections. The Abrams collection of early printing reveals in many ways that it was formed by a calligrapher and graphic designer of distinction - a recent example of his work being Abrams Venetian the unusually readable and graceful typeface with a beautiful accompanying italic in which this catalogue is printed. Mr. Abrams' book collecting began with modern fine printing. Some fifteen years ago his focus shifted back in time to what may be considered the perennial source of the modern typographic movements: the earliest examples of European printing. Those who regularly handle early printed books are continuously if subliminally reminded of what William Morris was perhaps the first collector to grasp clearly: that many of the earliest printed books are not merely remarkable productions for their time; they are in fact highly successful solutions to a multitude of design problems of a kind that the modern graphic artist or typographer encounters daily in only slightly variant forms. They are or can be important teaching tools examples not to be copied but absorbed. As exempla of excellence the best printing of the fifteenth- and sixteenth-centuries is all the more effective for its lack of fuss its willingness to let the result speak for itself." - from the introduction.

Upper foreedge corners slightly curled and lower foreedge corners a little creased Good. ‎Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications first editions sale dates 17-18 November 1975 15-16 March 1976. 3 vols printed boards large 8vo. frontispiece x 251 frontispiece viii 265 frontispieces viii 209 pp ills. throughout. 863 lots The lavishly illustrated auction catalogues for one of the great botanical library sales of the 20th century. Collations are given in cases where Sotheby's could not find an easily accessible description of a particular book. Part III includes a full index of provenances an addenda and a list of corrigenda. From the introduction: ".the collection of botanical books which Arpad Plesch built up for the Stiftung fur Botanik is particularly strong in books on medical botany and the botany of Hungary.Dr. Plesch conceived the foundation not only as a repository for rare books but also for rare plants and the Essais d'Acclimatation de Plantes tropicales en France 1962 by Pierre Gossot shows how successful he was with this latter interest. The library is not only a magnificent collection from the bibliographical point of view but also the working library of a serious botanical garden; and this dichotomy is reflected in the books.
