A Second Selection of Printed Books Mostly from the Fifteenth Century the Property of Mr J.R. Ritman Sold for the Benefit of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Amsterdam Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 5 December 2001
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th December 2001. Illustrated boards 4to. 294 pp plates ills. 122 lots. From the introduction: "In the past quarter-century no collector of early printing probably has placed a stronger and more original focus on the textual contents of his acquisitions than J. R. Ritman. This has resulted in the formation of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica in Amsterdam an internationally famous and energetic library that has become a centre for research in Neoplatonic Hermetic and Rosicrucian thought of a kind that never existed before. In view of this foundation interest in the texts and textual significance of his books it seems more than appropriate attempt to provide in an extensive index to this catalogue an analytic guide to the textual contents of the approximately one hundred fifty incunables offered both here and a year ago in the Sotheby's sale of 6 December 2000 the sales designated as II and I respectively. Despite the masses of research on fifteenth-century printing that have been carried from the age of Panzer and Hain down to the present no incunable catalogue has attempted to provide a full and consistent record of the textual contents of the books it describes. The Author-Text index attempts to identify both authors and texts - two quite different categories - in as concise and unambiguous a way as possible citing for each whatever reference works seem to provide the most precise most useful and least ephemeral information. Near Fine. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 5th December, 2001 hardcover

A Selection of Early Printed Books from Stonyhurst College Sold in Aid of Bursaries Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 18 June 2003
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 18th June 2003. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. 214 pp colour plates ills. 169 lots. Contents: Fifteenth century: Lots 1-160; Sixteenth century: 161-169. Index of Printers arranged by towns; Index of Provenances. From the introduction: The Sunderland sale in March 1883 afforded Bishop John Virtue a copy of the Jenson 1472 editio princeps of the Latin agricultural writers in a handsome early eighteenth-century English binding done for the collection of Charles Spencer the third Earl of Sunderland and from then on he seems to have bought fairly consistently from sales or from the purchases made by booksellers at these in London. From the Wodhull sale in 1886 there are several books and in 1891 books from the sale of Cornelius Paine. Indeed at this sale he purchased an edition of Nicolaus de Tudeschis Super Clementinas which in 1815 had been in the MacCarthy Reagh sale. This handsomely bound volume in a binding by Richard Wier for the count was printed in Toulouse lot 157. The splendid large copy of Simplicius Venice: Aldus 1526; lot 168 also in the MacCarthy Reagh sale seems to have been bought from a bookseller and in several volumes there are slips of catalogues: in one there is an undated note by Quaritch. Several books bought at the Syston Park sale 1884 and the Edward Sullivan sale May 1890 are to be found. An index of provenances is appended.Whilst many others at this period concerned themselves solely with classical texts Bishop Vertue spread his net wider. Nor did he limit himself to Italian presses: there are a number of rare and unusual items from the early Dutch presses including items from the Delft press of Jacob Jacobszoen van der Meer and in the sale are four English incunables from three presses those of Theodoric Rood William of Machlinia and Wynkyn de Worde. There are a number of volumes with contemporary manuscript annotations which show how they were read and used such as the copy of Acciaiolus on the Nicomachean Ethics Florence 1478; lot 1 or the Propertius Catullus and Tibullus Venice 1488; lot 88 which is provided with detailed indexes. Fine. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 18th June, 2003 unknown
