Sotheby's Monaco auction catalogue for the sale held on 16th June 1988. Cloth 4to. 205 pp numerous colour plates. 392 lots. In French. The first part of the sale in 1987 had been devoted to works on hunting; this second part was entirely devoted to ornithology and included works by Audebert. Audubon. Baer. Beebe. Bettoni. Boitard. Bonaparte. Bouchard. Bouteille. Buc'Hoz. Brown. Brisson. Buffon. Catesby. Collaert and many more. From an advertisement for the sale: "The sale is dominated by large groups of watercolours of outstanding quality by three French artists. Nicolas Robert 1614-1685 was certainly the finest Natural History artist of the 17th Century and his work usually watercolour on vellum is extremely rare; this is by far the largest group of watercolours by him left in private hands. Jacques Barraband 1767-1809 is best known for his illustrations to Le Vaillant's ornithological books examples of which are included in the sale. Some 120 of Barraband's large preparatory watercolours which are of breathtaking quality and in superb condition. A large group of watercolours by Edouard Travies 1805-after 1866 from the 1830's for editions of LeBuffon .is followed by a smaller group of working studies for lithographs which date from the end of the next decade and clearly show the artist's development. The sale also includes outstanding ornithological printed books from the 16th to the 19th Century." Estimates included at end of catalogue. Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper. Books for Cooks : from the Collections of Stanley J. Seeger Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 15 July 2010
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 15th July 2010. Laminated illustrated wrappers small 4to. 120 pp colour ills. 154 lots. From the introduction by Anton Edelmann: "The collection covers the period from the sixteenth century to the present day. Not only does it give a fascinating insight of what went into the pot but it also provides a valuable history of cooking and the world surrounding it. There are books with recipes about health and prescriptions for the sick from 1544 when garlic vinegar and many herbs were beginning to be recognised as having mdicinal properties. In 1572 Gomez Miedes wrote about the health benefits of salt. Then in 1821 there is the German chemist turned culinary chemist R. Ackermann. . The collection then moves on to recipes by the French classic chefs who in my opinion have had such a great influence on our present day cooking . We see Antoine Careme 1823 Brillat- Savarin 1824 and Antoine Parmentier after whom the famous potato dish was named. Last but not least there is a large selection of English manuscripts and books on anything from cooking to gardening to napkin folding and table manners the latter should probably go into reprint in my opinion. There is a quirky publication on eels not cooking this time and one on cookery in the tropics in 1897. The collection comes up to the present day with classics such as Delia Smith The Two Fat Ladies Rick Stein Gordon Ramsay and my old friend Brian Turner. .Fjnally I have to say this is an amazing not complete by any means but that would not be possible collection of cookery books which allows us to understand how deeply good creative food is anchored in our culture through the centuries. Then and now! Near Fine. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 15th July 2010 unknown
