Silver and Enamel Bindings. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 10 May 1985
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 10th May 1985. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 102 pp. 58 lots. From the preface: "Bindings made of silver or precious metals have always been rare and rather unusual. Splendid examples survive from the mediaeval period on Missals and Manuscripts but most of these are now in public institutions or still in the religious houses for which they were made all beyond the reach of private collectors. From the second half of the sixteenth century onwards they became less rare and the present collection is composed of objects of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with one example from the sixteenth lot 6. There have been very few collections of such bindings and this is certainly the first time that a whole sale catalogue has been devoted to them. During the period covered by this collection the production of these bindings took place almost exclusively in Holland and Germany although there are also examples here from Italy lots 34 39 55 Scandinavia lots 18 19 44 56 Switzerland lots 30 47 57 Hungary lot 12 and Russia lot 58. There is one example from England a hornbook lot 38. In the seventeenth century the covers were mainly engraved often inspired by contemporary engravings by masters such as de Bry lot 48 Collaert lot 31 and others. Particularly some of the Dutch ones show engraving of high quality. In the eighteenth century methods somewhat changed and many bindings are more or less heavily embossed. Their size on the whole was small; the larger ones are rarer as they were normally produced for churches and many still remain there. The subjects shown are almost exclusively religious and many of the German books which have been placed in them are of a highly pietistic character and mostly Protestant the Roman Catholic ones being much less com mon. By the end of the eighteenth century silver bindings went out of fashion not appealing to the changing religious views of the nineteenth-century.Attention should perhaps be drawn even in this remarkable and unusual collection to a few particularly interesting bindings. There are two bindings of Hebrew interest an early one of the sixteenth century lot 6 and the nielloed silver binding lot 24 a piece of extraordinary rarity. Lot 39 is a magnificent Venetian binding embossed in high relief intended for a Commissione and conveying the splendour and pride of the city. There is magnificent German parcel- gilt binding enamelled in translucent blue formerly in the Rothschild collection lot 23 an exquisite German gold and mother-of-pearl cover of the eighteenth century lot 35 and a splendid large Russian eighteenth-century Gospel book in a Moscow binding elaborately constructed on two levels and with a long interesting note describing the making of the binding and its cost. This catalogue is the result of the combined work of the Book and Silver Departments but we think it should be emphasised that many of the descriptions were originally made by the late John Hayward of the Victoria and Albert Museum and later an Associate of our firm for many years. The Hayward numbers refer to his article on part of this collection in the Connoisseur October 1952. The majority of the bindings in this collection were formerly in the collection of Major J.R. Abbey and his accession numbers have been quoted. Top fore-edge corner of title-page cut away otherwise Very Good. Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 10th May 1985 unknown
