The Fairfax Library and Archive Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 14 December 1993
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 14th December 1993. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to. unpaginated approximately 400 pp plates ills. 541 lots. From the introduction: "The Fairfax collection of over 5000 pamphlets and tracts of the English Civil War is undoubtedly the most important and largest collection of such material ever to be offered for sale at auction. Never before in English history had the recording in print of political and military events and of all manner and shades of opinion been possible on such a scale and with such immediacy as in the Civil War: nothing it seems was said or done debated in Parliament or fought out with sword and cannon but that it was without delay committed to print. The Fairfax collection was largely put together over a period of forty years early this century by Albert Fairfax 1870-1939 who succeeded his father as the twelfth Baron Fairfax in 1900 and had returned to live and work in England from Virginia where the sixth Baron Fairfax had settled early in the eighteenth century. It was an act of family piety the main concern being to document the career of the great Parliamentary general Sir Thomas third Lord Fairfax 1612-1671 and of his father Ferdinando 1584-1647. But although accounts of individual battles and sieges form much of the core of the collection the scope was widened to include the political and religious background so that a whole panorama of the concerns and events of the years 1641 to 1649 unfolds itself. The collection was extended backwards to include certain material from the earlier years of the reign of Charles I and later to carry the story up to the Restoration. But it is for the years of the Civil War itself that the collection can take its place alongside the great holdings of Oxford and London. Near Fine. The George Abrams Collection. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale dates : 16-17 November 1989.
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 16th & 17th November 1989. Cloth paper cover illustration 4to 31 cm. unpaginated profusely illustrated including many coloured plates. 238 lots. It is remarkable that a collector of not excessive means should have been able over a relatively brief period to have formed so fine and wide-ranging a collection of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century printed books including so many volumes that from general freshness of condition and from quality of rubrication and decoration would stand out in any of the world's major collections. The Abrams collection of early printing reveals in many ways that it was formed by a calligrapher and graphic designer of distinction - a recent example of his work being Abrams Venetian the unusually readable and graceful typeface with a beautiful accompanying italic in which this catalogue is printed. Mr. Abrams' book collecting began with modern fine printing. Some fifteen years ago his focus shifted back in time to what may be considered the perennial source of the modern typographic movements: the earliest examples of European printing. Those who regularly handle early printed books are continuously if subliminally reminded of what William Morris was perhaps the first collector to grasp clearly: that many of the earliest printed books are not merely remarkable productions for their time; they are in fact highly successful solutions to a multitude of design problems of a kind that the modern graphic artist or typographer encounters daily in only slightly variant forms. They are or can be important teaching tools examples not to be copied but absorbed. As exempla of excellence the best printing of the fifteenth- and sixteenth-centuries is all the more effective for its lack of fuss its willingness to let the result speak for itself." - from the introduction. The Great Exhibitions sale : two centuries of international art and design from the world's fairs. Sotheby's auction catalogue sale date: 31 October 2006
Sotheby's London auction catalogue for the sale held on 31st October 2006. Laminated illustrated wrappers 4to 27 cm. 264 pp plates ills. Lots 500-672 . From the introduction: "Just as today 'brand image' is a vital part of the promotion of fashion and style at the world exhibitions and fairs regular exhibitors became household names. In the field of ceramics the firms of Svres Minton Doulton Berlin and Meissen amongst many others contributed to almost every event bringing new products and styles to public attention. The famous glass artist Emile Gall rose to prominence through his evolving designs for furniture cameo glass and jewellery. In furniture Pugin Unke Gillows and Bugatti are household names. For silver the British firm of Elkington's and the Frenchman Morel rubbed shoulders under the glazed roofs of the pavilions of Paris London and New York. Sculpture abounded. Special room settings representing nations designers and new architectural styles - such as the Finnish Pavilion designed by Saarinen for Paris in 1900 - were introduced. Exhibitors sought to improve their selective products at each new event and by so doing added to the development of design and created a history of style. Indeed some international styles such as those of Art Nouveau Paris 1900 and Art Deco Paris 1925 grew directly out of these exhibitions. The expositions exhibitions and fairs have been truly inspiring and have left their legacy in the form of architecture - especially the Eiffel Tower Paris Exposition 1889 and the Philadelphia Museum of Art the site of the Centennial Exhibition in 1876 - and of course the products of the international manufacturers and designers. Their exhibits have been officially and internationally endorsed and widely collected. This sale offers you the chance to acquire many of those actual exhibits examples of the work of the numerous exhibitors and through associated objects get a sense of the magnificence that were the Great Exhibitions.
