‎Unbound. Near Fine. Pencil sketch on 5" x 8" notebook paper. Very faint mat burn at margin and a small paper remnant at the top of the sheet else near fine. A portrait of Shahn's mentor and first employer Mr. Hessenberg owner of Hessenberg's Lithograph Company on Beekman Street in New York. Three-quarter profile of Hessenberg from mid-chest bespectacled and smoking a small cigar. Captioned in pencil by Shahn: "A moral sensible well bred man will not affront no other can." Shahn has Inscribed the drawing at a later date to the subject's son Stanley Hessenberg and inserted the original date: "for Stanley a drawing of his father. Ben Shahn 1916."<br /> <br /> With: A very nice two page Autograph Letter Signed from Shahn to Stanley Hessenberg. Folded as mailed else fine in original envelope sent from Roosevelt New Jersey and postmarked in 1952. Really quite a wonderful letter discussing the elder Hessenberg: ".evoked a flood of memories. One in particular - a drawing I made of your father many many years ago. I found it! It was in a sketchbook dated 1915-1916. I've had it matted. It gives me great pleasure to send it along. The signature was just put on. I didn't sign my drawings in those days. The little aphorism must have been given to me by your father. I will tell you how fondly I treasure your father's memory. He was such a gentle soul. For a kid to have to go to work at 14 is not very pleasant. To have come under the gentle influence and tutelage of your father was the only compensation. unknown‎

Black cloth boards with wrap around off white vellum spine. Soil and yellowing to vellum. Two small pin holes to gutter. Text pages are crisp and clean. Housed in a grey protective chemise which slips into the grey slipcase. Chemise is in very nice condition with title in gold on spine. Slipcase has a title label on one side. Slipcase is cracked at spine edges with two inch loss at lower spine as well as cracking to upper and lower edges near mouth opening. ‎The Trianon Press: Paris 1966. Signed limited edition of Lithuanian-born American artist Ben Shahn's magnificently illustrated retelling of the Haggadah for Passover. Large folio original wrappers gilt titles to the front panel loose leaves as issued illustrated by Shaun with 21 color pictorial borders and line drawings and an additional double-page color lithograph also signed by him. One of only 228 copies signed by the author this is number 35. Text printed in Hebrew and English. With a translation introduction and commentary by Cecil Roth. Near fine in the original glassine which is in near fine condition. Housed in the publisher's original custom full parchment padded gilt clamshell box with a silver clasp. A beautiful example. Lithuanian-born graphic artist Ben Shahn developed many of the illustrations for his Haggadah in 1930 while working on his pictorial work on the Dreyfus case and conceiving his celebrated series of paintings of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. As in his other works Shahn's Haggadah illustrations highlight the struggle against oppression and injustice while maintaining a compassionate tone. In 1965 Shahn reproduced these Passover drawings which had already been acquired by the Jewish Museum incorporating them into this magnificent Haggadah. Paris unknown‎

Large unbound folio in stiff glassine covered wrappers housed in large vellum box stamped with gilt lettering on front back and spine with double clasp closure. Loosely inserted foam cushions at front and back of box. Includes an extra set of the coloured plates an extra set of the uncoloured plates and a proof state of the frontispiece in paper folders enclosed in a linen portfolio with ties. Very clean copy.One of 20 copies numbered I to XX this being VII. Signed and stamped with the artist's cypher on the frontispiece. Ben Shahn 1898-1969 enjoyed a long career as a social realist artist and left wing visionary. Widely recognized for his murals paintings commercial illustrations and photography he collaborated with Diego Rivera and undertook commissions for the Farm Security Administration. Perhaps his most famous work the Jersey Homesteads Mural has also been linked to the Haggadah and the themes of slavery the struggles of immigrants deliverance and redemption which were important throughout his career. hardcover‎
