Blaine in the 1871 directory all three were serving in office at the time other mounted photographs of Presidents Andrew Johnson 1869 directory and Abraham Lincoln 1867 directory; the 1864 Anthony Berger image taken at the Brady Studio in 1864 plate of the U.S. Capitol from a wood engraving folding map of Washington D.C. Photographs of the buildings include the White House Patent Office Post Office Treasury Department War Department Navy Department Agriculture Department the Capitol and the Smithsonian Institution Castle. The sixth portrait photograph is of Addison H. Laflin 1823-1878 U.S. Representative from New York 1865-1871; this is his daughter Grace Laflin's copy gilt-stamped on the upper board "Grace Laflin / From Her Father / March 4 1871." Repaired scrape on rear board small tear in lower edge of one leaf but an impressive extra-illustrated volume in an attractive presentation binding. Contemporary presentation binding: red morocco professional restoration to rear joint gilt gilt rules framing the boards enclosing an intricate ornamental rule pattern gilt title and ornaments between raised bands on spine gilt turn-ins all edges gilt. 9763. Benjamin Perley Poore was a newspaperman and clerk of the committee of the U.S. Senate on printing records where he began editing the Congressional Directory in 1867. Anthony. 448pp. plus 6 pages listing the proprietors of this "Edition de Luxe." Illustrated with maps and engravings. Dark burgundy morocco boards each with an elaborate border in blind the front board with the title and author in gilt the spine has raised bands creating five compartments each repeating a fleur-de-lis in blind save for the second and fourth from the top which have the title and the author's last name respectively gilt striping along the edges of the boards decorative gilt turn-ins all page edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Boards and spine show some wear sunning to the spine foxing to the preliminaries terminals and frontispiece with some light offsetting to the title page overall very good with the binding sound and the gilt remaining bright. Number 80 of 300 printed copies. Included in the list of proprietors is U.S. President Chester A. Arthur U.S. Vice President David Davis as well as members of Arthur's Cabinet and several U.S. senators. If the number assigned to each proprietor corresponds to the book number than this copy belonged to Gorham P. Pomroy Esq. a merchant from Providence RI. J.A. & R.A. Reid hardcover
