Truman." <br /> <br /> Publisher's blue cloth with blind-stamped front decoration in gilt with the pattern repeated in blind on the rear board spine ornament presenting the title in outline. 8vo 9 inches tall; 9 204 pages. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean even toning of the pages. Moderate shelf handling wear. Spine darkened and glue residue mark on the lower gutter of the rear paste-down. Truman provides detailed descriptions of California's vineyards citrus groves and other agricultural products reinforcing the state's image as an agricultural paradise. His book was among the early works to document the success of the citrus industry which later became one of California's defining economic forces. Truman visited nearly every orange grove and vineyard in Los Angeles County gathering his statistics.<br /> <br /> Truman discusses specific mines residences fruit orchards vineyards and ranches as well as general patterns of agriculture sheep and cattle raising irrigation and mineral resources. Beyond Los Angeles he describes the towns and cities of Anaheim Wilmington and San Bernardino.<br /> <br /> The book was part of a larger trend of 'booster' literature aimed at attracting settlers investors and tourists to California. Truman depicted the state as a land of opportunity emphasizing its fertile soil mild climate and economic potential. His work contributed to the influx of settlers especially from the Midwest and East Coast.<br /> <br /> Like many writers of the time Truman extolled California's climate as ideal for health seekers. This aspect of his work helped to establish Southern California-especially Los Angeles-as a haven for those suffering from respiratory ailments and other conditions.<br /> <br /> The book included vivid descriptions of California's landscapes from coastal views to mountain ranges helping to romanticize and market the state's natural beauty. Truman also discussed missions and early settlements providing valuable historical insight.<br /> <br /> By portraying California as a semi-tropical wonderland with boundless potential Semi-Tropical California helped drive migration and investment in the region. It contributed to the broader narrative that Southern California was an American Eden setting the stage for later land booms.<br /> <br /> Major Ben C. Truman was a well-known civil war correspondent and journalist and publicist often working to promote California's interests. As a teenager he saw the losses the Spanish inhabitants endured in the early days of California statehood. He saw many of his crimes on norteamericanos whites as a defender of Mexican-American rights. He was hero among his people with the women married and single pursuing him. His last affair led to his downfall. He was executed in 1875. The play Bandido helped popularize the story of Tiburcio Vásquez to a new generation of young Chicanos and Chicanas in the latter 20th century. A very good copy of his very scarce book bound in 1/4 pictorial black cloth over black cloth depicting a man on a horse and lettering gilt with some rubbing spine plain.
