Beyond Environment
Beyond Environment presents the potent interchange between architecture, Land Art, and Performance Art that emerged through Italian architect Gianni Pettena s idealized collaboration with American artists Allan Kaprow and Robert Smithson in the 1970s. Captivated by a journey to the USA in 1971, Pettena would converse with the American Midwest, a conversation culminating in his meeting with Robert Smithson in Salt Lake City. Earlier in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pettena s experiments in material trans- formations helped create some of the architect s most iconic works. Staged in an abandoned school and in a non-descriptive suburban house, and titled Ice House I and II, Pettena would pour water into the mold works he created around the buildings perimeter walls. Curing during the winter night to a coat of ice, the houses resonated with their conceptual predecessor, Kaprow s Fluids of 1967, as well as with an incomparable contemporary architectural sensibly concerned with the effects of variedly compounded, highly eidetic architectural surfaces. — Testi: Piccardo Emanuele, Wolf Amit. ARTS & ARCHITECTURE
arts & architecture 1945-54.
Köln: Taschen 2008. Facsimile Edition Limited to 5000 numbered copies. This is the first part 1945-1954 of Taschen’s facsimile edition of John Entenza's groundbreaking magazine which launched the Case Study House Program. “From the end of World War II until the mid-1960s exciting things were happening in American architecture: emerging talents were focusing on innovative projects that integrated low-cost materials and modern design. This trend was most notably embodied in the famous Case Study House Program which was championed by the era's leading American journal Arts & Architecture. Focusing not only on architecture but also design art music politics and social issues A&A was an ambitious and groundbreaking publication largely thanks to the inspiration of John Entenza who ran the magazine for over two decades until David Travers became publisher in 1962. The era's greatest architects were featured in A&A including Neutra Schindler Saarinen Ellwood Lautner Eames and Koenig; and two of today's most wildly successful architects Frank Gehry and Richard Meier had their debuts in its pages. A&A was instrumental in putting American architecture - and in particular California Modernism - on the map.†Publisher The supplementary booklet contains an original essay by former A&A publisher David Travers in English German French and Spanish plus a master index and tables of contents for the 118 issues of the magazine. A second part in 12 boxes containing 150 issues and covering the years 1955 to 1967 was issued in 2010. 10 Years consisting of ten boxes containing 118 issues in wrs. 6156 pages plus a supplementary booklet. illus. A city that remembers: Space and memory from Taksim to Sultanahmet.= Hatirlayan Sehir: Taksim'den Sultanahmet'e mekân ve hafiza.
New English Paperback. 8vo. In English and Turkish. 352 p., ills. A city that remembers: Space and memory from Taksim to Sultanahmet.= Hatirlayan Sehir: Taksim'den Sultanahmet'e mekân ve hafiza. "The publication offers its readers an opportunity to get acquainted with Istanbul - whether they be its resident or a tourist, as it presents the suppressed histories of the Ottoman era and Republican Turkey by looking at Istanbul from the lens of a tour guide. The places we pass by or visit on a daily basis are, inevitably, places with certain histories. These are mostly histories of appropriation and violation, injustice and power, but at times also histories of struggle. A City That Remembers sheds light on this rather 'unofficial' version of Istanbul's history through a total of 17 spaces, squares and buildings.".

"Over the past two decades the growing demand for hotels with especially personalized individual character has posed an interesting challenge for both architects and designers alike. Aesthetically speaking if a luxury hotel was once represented by the presence of expensive materials ostentatious decoration and formality now they are signaled by customized comfort and individual personality. This new generation of designer hotels-fueled by the exponential growth of the travel industry-is notable for its attention to detail and unique character. This attention to personality coupled with an organic integration of the building with its history and surroundings are the hallmarks of this new generation reflected in each project presented in this collection of design hotels."
