Athens with a distinctive style; he is named after Codrus, a legendary Athenian king depicted on one of his most characteristic vases. He was active as an artist during the rule of Pericles, as the Parthenon was built and then as the troubled times of the Peloponnesian War began. In contrast to the work of fellow artists of his day, the vases of the Codrus Painter appear to have been created almost exclusively for export to markets outside Athens and Greece, especially to the Etruscans in central Italy and to points further west. Amalia Avramidou offers a thoroughly researched, amply illustrated study of the Codrus Painter that also comments on the mythology, religion, arts, athletics, and daily life of Greece depicted on his vases. She evaluates his style and the defining characteristics of his own hand and of the minor painters associated with him. Examining the subject matter, figure types, and motifs on the vases, she compares them with sculptural works produced during the same period. Avramidou’ s iconographic analysis not only encompasses the cultural milieu of the Athenian metropolis, but also offers an original and intriguing perspective on the adoption, meaning, and use of imported Attic vases among the Etruscans.

Zijn bouwstijl wordt doorheen de tijd steeds persoonlijker en combineert hij klassieke en moderne stijlelementen zonder het harmonisch geheel van het project uit het oog te verliezen. Voor het eerst verschijnt een overzichtswerk van deze mysterieuze schepper die net voor zijn dood zijn volledige archief vernietigde. Er gaat ook aandacht uit naar zijn persoonlijk leven. Le style Beaux-Arts à l?épreuve du modernisme Dans la première moitié du vingtième siècle, les dizaines de bâtiments de l?architecte Joseph Diongre (1878-1963) ont indubitablement marqué l?espacepublic bruxellois de leur emprunte. L?homme de métier amitieux est surtout connu comme l?auteur du bâtiment « Flagey » à Ixelles, mais on lui doit aussi des monuments et des églises, des maisons particulières et des habitations sociales, des écoles, une maison communale et une cité-jardin. Avec le temps, son style est devenu toujours plus personnel, en combinant des éléments classiques et modernes sans perdre de vue l?harmonie générale du projet. Cette première publication consacrée à l?ensemble de l?oeuvre de ce créateur énigmatique, lui qui détruisit toutes ses archives avant de mourir, a vu le jour en étroite collaboration avec le Willemsfonds de la région de Bruxelles-Capitale.
