Arey, Henry W.
THE GIRARD COLLEGE AND ITS FOUNDER: Containing The Biography Of Mr. Girard.
pp. (4), 5-85, (2) Names of the Board of Directors and Officers + Portrait frontis and view of college. Frontis very foxed. Early manuscript ownership of Isaac Wayne Holstein, December 10th AD 1852 on first fly leaf. Manuscript insert of the building committee, Girard college and Penna hospital in manuscript and short hand notations. Light foxing. 12mo. 195 mm. Original green embossed cloth binding, mildly rubbed. Title continues: 'The History Of The Institution, Its Organization And Plan Of Discipline, With The Course Of Education, Forms Of Admission Of Pupils, Description Of The Buildings, etc.etc. And The Will Of Mr. Girard'. First Edition. Hardbound. Very good. Stephen Girard (1750-1831), born in Bordeaux France, arrived in Philadelphia in 1776. Through international shipping and merchant activities he became one of the richest men of his time. Starting in 1811 he made an additional fortune as America's first Private Banker. In this role he helped finance the U.S. through the War of 1812. With the assistance of noted attorney William J. Duane, (1780-1865), in the 1820s, he wrote a long will and testament, outlining every detail of how his fortune would be used. He delighted in keeping the document secret, knowing that everyone wondered what would happen to his fortune. Immediately after his death in 1831, the provisions of his will were made public. In addition to extensive personal and institutional bequests, he left the bulk of his fortune to the city of Philadelphia to build and operate a residential school for impoverished orphans. This innovative social vision was considered extremely unusual both then and now: to use the Girard fortune not to endow another so-called "Ivy League" college or university but to assist children in need. In 1831, the bequest was the largest single act of philanthropy up to that time in American history, and the basis for Girard College. Nice copy. PAIMP 23

Argentina. Architecture
Templo Myrurgiano Erigido en la Argentina por Falcon & Cia. en el Año 1939
Buenos Aires 1939. Very good. 22 leaves with twenty-one original photographs each 7 x 9 inches plus interleaved plastic guards. Oblong folio. Spiral wire bound plastic and synthetic boards with decorative wire edges. Light wear and soiling at boards edges. Occasional light soiling internally. Photos crisp and clean mounted directly to leaves. An attractive presentation album promoting the opening in 1939 of Falcon & Cia. the Argentinian distributor of Myrurgia a Spanish perfumer and cosmetics manufacturer. Falcon & Cia.'s offices were located at 743 Juncal in the same block with the iconic Palacio Estrugamou a monumental and elaborate example of Parisian residential architecture in Buenos Aires. By contrast the modernized headquarters of Falcon & Cia. are somewhat more functional but still reflect a sleek Art Deco style. The present album mostly showcases the renovated interior with modern open offices and architectural details with Deco furniture and design elements. The lack of ornamentation on the columns windows and floors reflect the contemporary international style and perhaps also the economics of this period at the end of the Depression just prior to the outbreak of World War II. This was also a time during which Spanish companies like Myrurgia expanded into South America in order to develop new markets and to manufacture their products locally thereby avoiding the chaos of their Civil War. A neat and scarce photographic document of architectural style in Argentina in the late 1930s. Not in OCLC. books
