‎C'est en 1917 que Brutails publia son fameux petit volume “Pour comprendre les monuments de la France”, chef-d'oeuvre de clarté et de netteté, où la science archéologique apparaît comme définitivement fixée et mise à la portée de tous les débutants. L'ouvrage est entièrement théorique, en ce sens qu'aucun monument n'est cité. — "A côté des monographies détaillées et des gros traités sur l'architecture du moyen âge et des temps modernes, il y avait place pour un manuel résumant la science des uns et des autres et exposant d'une manière aussi claire et précise que possible l'état des différents problèmes que soulève l'étude des monuments. C'est ce manuel que vient d'écrire notre confrère M. Brutails ; nul mieux que lui n'y était préparé par ses travaux antérieurs. Le but que se propose l'auteur, c'est de faire comprendre les monuments de la France, d'apprendre à les reconnaître, à les dater, à démêler les raisons d'être de leurs formes. Le plan du volume est logique : analyse de la construction, de la décoration, étude des édifices religieux, militaires, civils... On est véritablement étonné de tout ce que M. Sa forte personnalité a largement contribué à la modernisation des Archives départementales de la Gironde. Ses travaux de paléographie et d'histoire de l'art demeurent indispensables, même aujourd'hui, aux chercheurs qui s'intéressent à l'art médiéval dans le sud-ouest de la France. - L'oeuvre principale de Brutails est Les Vieilles Églises de la Gironde, que l'auteur présente, dans sa préface, comme le résultat de vingt-trois années de travail. Elle fait de Brutails un historien de l'art du bâti médiéval. Au total, si les monographies fournissent des indications qui restent précieuses pour mieux comprendre ces monuments, la synthèse, qui fourmille cependant de notations utiles, reste marquée par l'analyse des formes et des matériaux. Comme l'a observé Camille Jullian, les travaux de Brutails font référence à ceux d'Auguste Choisy, qui fut son modèle non pas tant pour son Histoire de l'architecture que pour L'Art de bâtir chez les Romains. Brutails a également tenté de toucher des lecteurs hors du cercle restreint des historiens des bâtiments médiévaux avec trois livres destinés aux touristes éclairés : Guide illustré dans Bordeaux et ses environs (1906) ; Album d'objets d'art existant dans les églises de la Gironde (1907) et Pour comprendre les monuments historiques de la France (première édition 1917, quatrième 1922). ‎De Bruycker studierte an der Akademie in Gent, anschließend in London von 1914-1918. Am Institut supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Antwerpen war als Lehrer tätig. Obwohl er auch als Aquarellist und Zeichner arbeitete, hat er seine Hauptbedeutung als Radierer. ?Seine Kunst trägt metaphysisches Gepräge. Seine von spukhaften Visionen erfüllten figürlichen Kompositionen üben eine faszinierende Wirkung aus, die stimmungsmäßig an Rabelais und E.A. Poe, H. Bosch und P. Brueghel erinnert. Seine Landschaften und Architekturdarstellungen sind phantastische Träume, die nur ganz von fern noch an das Naturvorbild erinnern. Das Erlebnis des Krieges hat sich ihm zu einem Danse macabre von erschütternder Dämonie verdichtet. Aus seinen Zeichnungen und Aquarellen spricht ein philosophischer Weltbetrachter, zugleich ein erbarmungslos scharfer Menschenbeobachter, dessen Spottlust vor nichts halt macht. Gelegentlich wird man an Kubin erinnert. Seine Linie hat etwas eminent Anregendes, und Form und Inhalt kommen in seinen Radierungen restlos zur Deckung, worin das Geheimnis ihrer Wirkung liegt....?
