Voormalig directeur van De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam en initiatiefnemer, oprichter en eerste directeur va de Hermitage Amsterdam, Ernst Veen, is al jaren gefascineerd door de combinatie van kunst en natuur. Dankzij de tentoonstellingen die hij organiseerde, kwam hij op unieke plekken in de wereld. In bijzondere tuinen vol kunstwerken verwonderde hij zich over de manier waarop kunst en natuur elkaar kunnen versterken. Uiteraard kon Veen deze ervaring en herinneringen niet tentoonstellen in zijn musea - de werken lieten zich immers niet vervoeren.
