‎Summary This monograph entails a comparative study of two early modern urban centers in Transylvania: Cluj (Kolozsv r, Klausenburg) and Sibiu (Nagyszeben, Hermannstadt). It develops a new perspective on urban history in Transylvania, by filling the recent historiographical lacuna on early modern urban elites. This book attempts to combine traditional and modern research methods, by analyzing and comparing a large volume of unpublished data along three research lines. First, the historical background within which of the town elites in Cluj and Sibiu monopolized power are analyzed, including the development of town autonomy and governmental systems, the legal background of urban leadership, its continuity and the conditions under which the political urban elite acted in each town. Secondly, a thorough archontological and prosopographical research, with a special focus on marriage strategies and professional competence leads to a socio-political characterization of the elites of Cluj and Sibiu. Finally, an attempt is made to provide insight into the representation and self-fashioning of these elites. TABLE OF CONTENTS The manuscript has three main chapters, an introductory chapter, conclusions, bibliography and index of names. The introductory chapter starts with the definitions of terms used in the text along with a short review of the elite theories with references to Max Weber, Norbert Elias, Gaetano Mosca or Vilfredo Pareto. This part is followed by the presentation of the aims and of the methodology pursued during the research. The presentation of the sources was split into two categories: unpublished primary sources and edited documents. Subsequently, the historiographical traditions on the topic - both in Hungary/Romania and international - are discussed. The first main chapter is titled 'Respublica - res publica' and it is structured on three subchapters and thirteen sub-sub chapters. The first section (1.1.) is dedicated to the legal and institutional framework within which the urban elites of Cluj and Sibiu operated. The main objective of this section is to acquaint the readers with the beginnings of urban government and autonomy in the two towns in order to discuss the whole process of elite formation from the medieval period until the early modern. I have tried here to cutback some erroneously interpreted historical facts that has been reproduced time and again in scholarly works without any constructive criticism. A second section explores the structures of the town governments in the sixteenth century (1.2.), the history of the main urban offices and their legal context. A third section ends this chapter by having a closer look on the forces that might have interfered with the process of elite formation or disturbed it. Following Karen Lambrecht's theory, elite formation is studied in relation to the court, the Church, the Reformation movements, university and multi-ethnicity. This part gives a deeper insight on the political, religious and ethnic realities of the region in the sixteenth century. The second main chapter ('Magistri rei publicae') focuses on the archontological and propographical research on the urban elites. First, the legal, moral and material criteria of eligibility in public offices are discussed. Presenting several case studies, the second part makes a statistical and analytical presentation of the career building and power concentration in a comparative way. The following two subchapters investigate the 'cursus honorum' (the advancement of public office-holders within the ranks of the town council) and the networking strategies of the local elites (2.4.). This section leads to some intriguing aspects of power concentration within the local elites, family-networks and business relations are revealed. This main chapter concludes in an analytical subchapter dealing with the question whether the governing elites in Cluj and Sibiu can be categorized as a patrician communities or not (2.5). The third part of this book ('Shaping self- and communal identity') is dedicated to the self-fashioning, and by that, to the communal individuation through the representation of the elites. Two main aspects are discussed here: the rituals and the ceremonies of the council election, constituted by a strong interaction between town and elites, and the erudite self-representation of the leaders through art and architecture. The book is provided with a concluding chapter, a vast bibliography and an index of names.‎

‎in een redactie van Steven Jacobs, over De Keysers teksten als kunstcriticus in de jaren 1950 en begin 1960. Raoul De Keyser (1930-2012) start met schilderen als jongeman in de jaren 1940. Al in de vroege jaren 1950 breekt hij zijn artistieke loopbaan af voor een job als ambtenaar en journalist. Pas in 1964 manifesteert hij zich opnieuw als kunstenaar met werken die aanvankelijk de nieuwe trends in de figuratieve schilderkunst (Pop Art, nouveau r alisme) oproepen, terwijl ze later aansluiten bij het Amerikaans modernisme (Colorfield Painting, Post-Painterly Abstraction, Hard Edge). In de jaren 1970 vertoont De Keysers werk sterke overeenkomsten met zowel de Minimal Art als de Fundamentele schilderkunst. De tentoonstelling in VANDENHOVE focust op deze vroege periode in De Keysers werk en bestaat uit een twintigtal schilderijen die nooit eerder werden ge xposeerd of die niet meer werden getoond sinds de jaren 1960 en '70. Naast enkele jeugdwerken omvat de expositie een uitzonderlijke selectie schilderwerken uit priv -collecties, van werken uit de jaren 1960 die representatief zijn voor de zogenaamde Nieuwe Visie tot gelaagde schilderijen uit de jaren 1970. Zij vertonen de vertrouwde landschappen, kamers, krijtlijnen, tenten en wolken, soms in verrassende kleuren die afwijken van zijn meer bekende werken. Sommige schilderijen lijken bovendien bepaalde thema's of gevoeligheden aan te kondigen die later in zijn loopbaan verder werden uitgewerkt. Samen tonen ze een traject doorheen de motieven, variaties, hernemingen en overschilderingen die het hele oeuvre van De Keyser tekenen. Naast deze nooit of zelden getoonde werken, omvat de tentoonstelling stukken uit het archief van Raoul De Keyser, dat deel uitmaakt van de collectie van de Centrale Bibliotheek van de Universiteit Gent. Installatiezichten, posters, folders, schetsen en aantekeningen (waarvan vele nooit eerder werden gepubliceerd) werpen een nieuw licht op De Keysers vroege artistieke ontwikkelingen, met aandacht voor onder meer zijn activiteiten als sportjournalist en kunstcriticus, zijn connecties met Nederlandse musea en galeries, zijn affiniteiten met grafische vormgeving, zijn atelier als tentoonstellingsruimte en zijn niet aflatende belangstelling voor het 'object-karakter' van zijn schilderijen. De expositie Lang niet gezien: Raoul De Keyser 1946-1964-1980 grijpt plaats ter gelegenheid van het verschijnen van twee publicaties over de jonge De Keyser.‎

'In almost every ordinary church yard we may see altar-monuments, with the upper surface and some of the sides broken to pieces, and the whole a heap of ruins, even before they are fifty years old.' Godwin develops his thesis with passion, with fascinating references to the array and state of monuments in St. Paul's and Westminster Abbey, and an account of visits to Thetford, Valle Crucis Abbey, Ewelme, Kenilworth, Reading Abbey and the Seven Churches in Ireland. He concludes with a request for an atlas or catalogue of sepulchres along the lines of a traveller's guide, to be 'of a very different measure of utility from the 'Catalogue of Gentlemen's Seats' which is now appended to the 'Book of Post-Roads through Every Part of Great Britain'. ‎Tim Van Laere Gallery presenteert Day by Day, Part II, de eerste Belgische solotentoonstelling van de Armeense kunstenaar Armen Eloyan. In de pasteuze schilderijen van Armen Eloyan ontmoeten wondermooi pathos, brutaliteit, sensualiteit en het groteske elkaar net na de rampsituatie. Eloyan slaagt erin een sfeer en stemming te cre ren die doorheen de hele tentoonstelling echoot. De meeste werken hebben mysterieuze titels zoals The Light called ?Day?, and the Darkness called ?Night? of Jekaterina Jekaterina, maar worden bevolkt door een vertrouwd onderwerp zoals stripfiguren, theepotten of tomatenhoofden. Deze personages worden weergegeven door brede, krachtige verfstreken. "Het is gebaseerd op een cartoon, of eerder op een abstract beeld van een cartoon. Het is alsof ik met het schilderij speel. Als ik bijvoorbeeld Coming-Painting schilder, is het een De Kooning, maar dan wel op een manier die veel sneller en losser is. Willem De Kooning en Philip Guston leiden me hiertoe," zegt Eloyan. Door te kiezen voor diptieken voor Rabbit and Bear and Bear and Rabbit, The Door en Dracula wil Eloyan vage existenti le vragen ondermijnen en het tegenovergestelde van de minimalisten bereiken. Eloyans werken staan steeds in relatie met het lichaam, zoals de uitvoering van zijn schilderijen een brutale fysieke handeling is. Day by Day, Part II is een tentoonstelling doordrenkt met Eloyans drift om het schilderen te vieren en de behoefte om zich te verdiepen onder de lagen van het puur esthetische.‎
