‎Leo Gestel (1881-1941), een van de bekendste Nederlandse modernisten, en Gustave De Smet (1877-1943), een van de belangrijkste Vlaamse expressionisten, sloten in 1914 een innige vriendschap. Zij steunden elkaar in moeilijke periodes en inspireerden elkaar op artistiek gebied. De eerste ontmoeting tussen beide kunstenaars vond plaats nadat De Smet in 1914 naar Nederland vluchtte vanwege het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Leo Gestel introduceerde hem in de Amsterdamse kunstwereld. In de daaropvolgende periode veranderde De Smet sterk van stijl, onder invloed van het werk van Gestel en de kunstenaars van de Bergense School. In 1922 keerde De Smet terug naar Vlaanderen en ging Gestel op reis door Europa. Enkele jaren later zocht Gestel vanwege priv omstandigheden zijn toevlucht in Vlaanderen en dit keer nam Gestel in zijn werk thema's en stijlkenmerken van De Smet over. Deze rijk ge llustreerde publicatie neemt u mee in het vervlochten leven en werk van deze belangrijke meesters. De publicatie verschijnt bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar.‎

‎Summary At the beginning of the fourteenth century, Jofroi, a brother of the Dominican house of St Saviour's in Waterford, Ireland, translated into French and adapted from the Latin three texts: the De excidio Troiae of the so-called 'Dares Phrygius', the Breviarium historiae romanae of Eutropius, and Pseudo-Aristotelian Secretum secretorum. While the first two, La gerre de Troi and Le regne des Romains are generally close translations, Le secr de secr s is much modified by omissions and interpolations of exempla and scientific material. In his enterprise, Jofroi was aided and abetted by his scribe, the Walloon merchant and custos, Servais Copale. This book is the first critical edition of Jofroi's oeuvre. The texts are accompanied by a general introduction, individual introductions to each of the three texts, extensive notes, a substantial glossary, and an index of proper names. Jofroi and Servais collaborated in Waterford, not Paris, as has long been assumed, and these texts are therefore witness to the importance of French as a literary language in southeastern Ireland.
