‎Summary Hoards are among the most enigmatic of archaeological finds. The term 'hoard' itself has been applied to different assemblages across space and time, from the Stone Age into the modern era, with an inventory that typically includes artefacts made of valuable raw materials, to which significant symbolic meanings can also be assigned. Archaeologists have been trying to understand this phenomenon for much of the last century, sometimes emphasizing the universal nature of hoards, but more typically focusing on specific regions, chronologies, and finds. They have, for the most part, used results derived from typolo-chronological methods. Contemporary archaeology has, however, developed a broad spectrum of paradigms and methods, and hoardresearch in the twenty-first century draws on an increasingly wide range of approaches. This volume presents examples of research that make use of these multi-faceted approaches through a focus on European hoards of metal objects dating to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The contributors to this volume make use of diverse methods, among them archaeometallurgical analyses, studies of use- and production-wear, destruction patterns, and landscape archaeology, but together, their common denominator is the search for a methodological toolkit that will allow researchers to better understand the phenomenon of hoard-deposition more broadly. Bien que l?Epistre ne soit pas le texte le plus connu et le plus appr ci de nos jours, il s?agit d?un texte majeur dans la vie de la premi re femme de lettres de la litt rature fran aise : le nombre de manuscrits conserv s (presque une cinquantaine) atteste de l?accueil que lui ont r serv les lecteurs et lectrices du XVe si cle. Le manuscrit 606 du fonds fran ais de la Biblioth que nationale de France, produit entre 1405 et 1408, faisait partie l?origine du deuxi me recueil des oeuvres de Christine, commandit par Louis d?Orl ans, fils du roi Charles V (r. 1364-1380) et fr re du roi Charles VI (r. 1380-1422). Dans ce manuscrit, chaque ensemble texte-glose-all gorie de l?Epistre est compl t par l?ajout d?une miniature. Le manuscrit fr. 606 est le plus ancien des trois manuscrits pr sentant un cycle complet de 101 enluminures ex cut s sous sa supervision. Il montre l?approche innovatrice de Christine en ce qui concerne l?organisation textuelle et le rapport entre l?image et le texte, sa capacit mobiliser une quipe d?artistes de qualit (ici le Ma tre de l? p tre Oth a et son atelier, le Ma tre au safran, et le Ma tre d?Egerton), ainsi que son d sir de valoriser le r le de la femme dans l?histoire et la soci t . ‎J.M. (Jan van Hardeveld (1891-1953), architect te Amsterdam, heeft in zijn omvangrijke oeuvre alle toen gangbare stijlen toegepast. Gedurende zijn hele carri re heeft hij de flexibiliteit gevoeld om te ontwerpen op een wijze, die hem en zijn opdrachtgevers uit de verschillende gremia passend achtten. Die veelzijdigheid is ook terug te vinden in zijn vele functies en publicaties, waarin hij die pluriformiteit in bouwen bepleitte. Die houding leidde er wel toe dat hij, bekeerling tot het katholicisme op latere leeftijd, in felle debatten verwikkeld raakte met die katholieke architecten, die onder aanvoering van prof. M.J. Granpr Moli re in de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw uitdroegen dat er door hen slechts in n stijl mocht worden gebouwd: het traditionalisme. Van Hardevelds leven en werk zijn tot nog toe onderbelicht gebleven. Waarschijnlijk komt dat deels omdat hij niet een vernieuwende eigen stijl heeft ontwikkeld, deels omdat hij nauwelijks tot geen archief heeft nagelaten. Deze monografie laat zien dat die onderbelichting niet terecht is. Deze bonas-uitgave zet zijn leven en werk vol in de schijnwerpers. Mr. Mart J.M. Franken ma (Bergen op Zoom, 1950) was na zijn rechtenstudie van 1973 tot 2016 advocaat in Breda. Vanaf 2013 studeerde hij Kunst- en Cultuurwetenschappen aan de Open Universiteit te Heerlen. Zijn bachelor behaalde hij eind 2018 en zijn master begin 2021. Zijn masterscriptie ging over de positie van de Amsterdamse architect Jan van Hardeveld (1891-1953) in de (katholieke) bouwkunst, meer in het bijzonder over zijn bijdrage aan het debat over de katholieke architectuur in het interbellum. Voor deze bonas-uitgave zette hij zijn onderzoek over deze architect voort, met name ten aanzien van het door deze geproduceerde oeuvre.‎

In the middle sixteenth-century artists such as Catherina Sanders van Hemessen (c. 1500 - 1566) and Sofonisba Anguissola (c. 1532 - 1625) memorably depicted themselves with brushes, palette, and Mahlstick, as did leading artists of the subsequent generations. Jan van Mieris' self-portrait is in dialogue with that of his father Frans, and engages a tradition that ultimately reaches back to Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400 - 1464) and forward to Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669) - critical reference points with which the elder and younger Mieris would have been well acquainted. And by placing themselves at a ledge, father and son invoked a pictorial tradition with roots in Raphael's iconic portrait of Castiglione. Although acquired in 1933 as a diptych, questions have remained about their initial configuration, and how these paintings functioned. The recent technical investigations of the paintings and their original frames added further complexities to these inquiries when a fragmentary text in Middle Dutch was discovered through X-radiography on the frames surrounding the two paintings. The many facets of the ensuing investigation necessitated an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers involving an art historian, paintings conservator, and museum scientist ? namely, Maryan Ainsworth, Sophie Scully, and Silvia Centeno. Moreover, the new discovery of the formerly hidden text called for the enrichment of the interdisciplinary team by a paleographer and a classical philologist, Marc Smith and Christina Meckelnborg. This book relates the unfolding story of the investigations from in-depth technical research, facilitating the conservation treatment of the frames, to the art historical study that connected these findings to the religious, political, and social contexts of the times. Through considerable interdisciplinary detective work, it was possible to reach a new understanding about the original form and function of the Crucifixion and Last Judgment and their pivotal role concerning devotions to a cherished relic, the Miraculous Bleeding Host, housed in the then collegiate church of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula in Brussels. The implications of these discoveries also shed new light on the relationship between The Met Crucifixion and Van Eyck?s metalpoint drawing of the same theme in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. Finally, the study of the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment draws attention to commissions Van Eyck received that are somewhat outside of the canon of works usually associated with this esteemed artist.
