Intérieur frais malgré de légers défauts : Petite annotation manuscrite ancienne à l'encre au recto du f. de texte f.9 entrainant un petit trou sans perte de lettre et léger griffonage angulaire au f. de texte f. 48 et au recto blanc du f.49 ; fines et habiles restaurations de papier en marge de quelques f. de texte (f. 29, 39, 41, 54, 94, 95), et à quelques planches (f.7, 65, 66, 66 bis, 67, 72, 75 bis) dont certaines sont doublées ; une petite déchirure marginale au f.62, tache marginale au f.85, petites mouillures angulaires masquées et blanchies du f. 98 à la fin , sans gravité. Demi-vélin à coins, papier dominoté sur les plats. Reliure postérieure. (une tache au Ier plat)‎

‎Edition originale de ce splendide ouvrage qui traite du gigantesque travail que fut le transport et l'érection de l'obélisque, depuis le cirque de Néron jusqu'à la place Saint-Pierre de Rome. Réalisé en 1586, le chantier dura 5 mois avec le concours de près de 1000 ouvriers, 150 chevaux et 47 grues. Les planches techniques qui montrent l'édification des grues sont particulièrement importantes car elles eurent une influence sur la technologie ultérieure. Les superbes planches gravées par Natale Bonifazio da Selenico (1537-1592) d'après les dessins de Fontana, font de cet ouvrage l'un des plus beaux livres d'architecture de l'époque baroque. Il interpréta sur cuivre un portrait de larchitecte, 35 planches simples, 2 doubles et une dépliante. Douze concernent lopération en elle-même, les 26 autres représentent les travaux de Fontana pour Sixte Quint : la Villa Montalto, résidence du pape sur le mont Quirinal, la chapelle de Santa Maria Maggiore, lérection dans labside de cette chapelle dun obélisque augustinien, la description de la cathédrale San Giovanni, et diverses portes conçues pour le programme de Sixte V durbanisation et de sécurisation de Rome. Domenico Fontana (1543-1607), un architecte au service de Sixte V. Natif de Lugano, Fontana reçut une formation de mathématicien. Après divers travaux darchitecture, il rencontra le cardinal Felice Peretti, futur Sixte Quint (1585-1590), sinstalla à Rome au service de ce dernier, qui limposa en qualité darchitecte en chef. Fontana participa ainsi à son ambitieux projet : reconstruire la Ville éternelle. Sixte Quint, ayant décidé de déplacer lobélisque mal situé au ras de labside du nouveau Saint-Pierre, confia à Fontana, muni des pleins pouvoirs, la réalisation de ce tour de force. Lun des événements majeurs de la Rome du cinquecento. Bel exemplaire, malgré les légers defauts signalés, de ce fameux ouvrage illustrant l'un des grands exploits d'ingénierie de la Renaissance. B&w photographs by Paul Braun Arthur Mooney and others. Inscribed on half title page: "Norah and Chew Atkins / their book inscribed in / memory of old times by / Hulbert Footner / Jan 22nd 1940". Also included an autograph letter signed by Footner on Charlesgift notepaper referring to a possible visit and mentioning that "For August everything too is uncertain. I have a lot of theatrical business coming to a head and it may be necessary for me to be in New York at that time." Footner uses small x's instead of periods in the text. The envelope is postmarked Solomons MD 1916. During the 1916-17 season Footner's play "Shirley Kaye" had a reasonably successful run at the Hudson Theatre New York and the proceeds helped in the restoration of Charles' Gift. Also laid in at front the previously folded chipped and wrinkled/creased front panel and flap from the original dust jacket. Hulbert Footner 1879-1944 explored large areas of Northern Canada by canoe in his early years and produced works of fiction and non-fiction based on his experiences. He was also a playwright and in later life a successful mystery writer creating such characters as Madame Rosika Storey. This semi-autobiographical book details the purchase and restoration of an historic house but also looks back into the history of Calvert County and recounts the people and events that played a part in Footner's life for over thirty years. Minor wrinkle at top of spine light browning and scattered tiny/small foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top and top corner a few small foxing marks on preliminary pages and on the last few blank papes a few tiny dents on bottom of text block. .
