‎De rijke verzameling middeleeuwse beeldhouwkunst van het Rijksmuseum heeft vanouds een sterk Nederlands karakter. ‎Notre-Dame de Paris vue par son restaurateur le plus controversé. Édition originale, illustrée de 2 plans et de 3 planches gravées, de cet ouvrage publié en 1856 alors que les travaux de restauration de la cathédrale entrepris par Viollet-le-Duc arrivaient à leur terme. Mêlant l'histoire de Notre-Dame à des descriptions architecturales d'une impressionnante exhaustivité, l'ouvrage témoigne du souhait des auteurs de voir « renaître [ses] anciens jours de foi et de grandeur, en même temps que, par les soins du gouvernement, les artistes de notre époque lui rendent son antique parure, effaçant de toutes parts les outrages du temps et des hommes. » (p. 132) Membre du Comité de la langue, de l'histoire et des arts de la France et de la Commission des édifices religieux, Ferdinand de Guilhermy (1808-1878) partageait avec Viollet-le-Duc une passion pour l'archéologie du Moyen-Âge. Ce-dernier, qui s'était fait connaître sur le chantier de la basilique de Vézelay, s'engagea en 1843, avec Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus, sur un vaste projet de restauration de Notre-Dame, que le siècle précédent n'avait pas épargnée. Il y introduisit des ornements d'un style novateur, précurseur de l'Art nouveau. La plupart de ces décorations, jugées trop fantaisistes, seront remplacées en 1945 on conserva néanmoins ses célèbres gargouilles. Viollet-Le-Duc justifie son parti-pris artistique dans un chapitre portant sur la décoration et l'ameublement de la cathédrale : « Il n'existe peut-être dans aucun des diocèses de France une église épiscopale dont la décoration intérieure soit aussi peu en rapport avec la dignité de son caractère. » (p. 109). C'est en effet avec émotion que les auteurs décrivent, par exemple, la destruction des vitraux du Moyen-Âge ordonnée par les chanoines sous Louis XV : « Pierre Levieil, fabricant de vitraux modernes, et destructeur patenté de vitraux anciens, raconte froidement qu'il eut mission de démonter toutes les verrières de la nef et du choeur de Notre-Dame pour les remplacer par du verre blanc [...] » (p. 119). Curieusement, la flèche de Notre-Dame, qui ne fut inaugurée qu'en 1859, est représentée sur les gravures ; il s'agit donc autant d'une « description » que du projet de Le-Duc pour l'édifice. Quelques rares rousseurs, habile petites restaurations au dos.‎
