In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 103 p., b/w plates (19 unnumbered b/w plates and 1 map). First edition of this extremely rare first-hand and historically significant eyewitness account of the Syrian and the Suez Canal Operations during the Great War by an Ottoman soldier and statesman. Erden describes in this book his return to Istanbul after his military attaché duty in Paris and his departure to Damascus to join the 4th Army in Syria under the command of Cemal Pasha (1872-1922). He then discusses the Arab Revolt in Hejaz and its possible effects on the Ottoman Empire (The Arab Uprising was initiated by Sharif Hussein bin Ali in June 1916 during the Great War with the aim of creating an independent and united Arab state comprising of Aden in Yemen and Aleppo in Syria against the Imperial Ottoman). After disclosing his views and the actions of the army in the region, he goes on to describe Jerusalem, the Suez Canal, and the wars that took place there. Erden gave new information on the reasons and results of the Canal operation, the condition of the Turkish army along Palestine and Syria fronts, the relations among the Turkish staff, and the nature of the Arab revolt through his views and observations in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria fronts accumulated as he was Cemal Pasha's chief of staff. Erden was a Turkish soldier and war historian. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1903, he worked in the units and headquarters in Yemen, as the staff of the 3rd Corps in the Balkan War and as the Paris Military Attaché. During the Great War, he served as the Chief of Staff of the 4th Army within the entourage of Admiralty Minister Cemal Pasha in Syria. Özege 16174. Kursun p. 51.

Ferdinand Marie, Vicomte de Lesseps (1805-1894) was the French developer of the Suez Canal, which joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas in 1869, and substantially sailing distances and times between the West and the East. He attempted to repeat this success with an effort to build a sea-level Panama Canal during the 1880s, but the project was devastated by epidemics of malaria and yellow fever in the area, and the projected de Lesseps canal was left uncompleted and eventually partially superseded by a non-sea-level canal with locks, built by the United States and completed in 1914. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Printed heading Ministere des Travaux Publics manuscript address Cairo 20 May 1869. Minister of Public Works with a key role in the building of the Suez Canal. The document numbered No.39 top left corner is three pages folio sl. damaged but text clear and complete. He reminds his correspondent that "Son Altesse le Khedive" has appointed him "ministere des travaux publics" four months previously. He discusses "le reglement" by which decisions were to be made and the situation he finds himself in "ne sachant au juste sur quoi appuyer mes actes officielle je ne puis plus longtemps rester dans la vague qui empeche toute administration. He describes a complex administrative situation and concludes by asking his correspondent to "faire terminer cette affaire . . ." The handwriting is the same as that in the "Khalil Linant" letter in my inventory #4684 indicating that his son acted as his secretary. Note: The term "Khedive" was first used in 1867. Opening day of the Suez Canal
THE OPENING OF THE SUEZ CANAL. 13½ x 9½ inches. Albumen photograph mounted on paper annotated in pencil "Port Said 16 Nov 1869" in the lower left. Excellent condition. This photograph depicts the harbor and canal on the day of the opening of the Suez Canal the "greatest engineering feat of the nineteenth century" Smith. "Clearly the canal's opening festivities placed Egypt in a new way on the European cultural map" Haddad "Digging to India: Modernity Imperialism and the Suez Canal". The opening of the Suez Canal immediately transformed world trade. Connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea allowed ships to sail between Europe and Asia without navigating around Africa. Trade between East and West grew at a record rate. "The construction and completion of the great Suez Canal . . . was one of the most remarkable engineering enterprises of the age one that will be an infinitely . . . important boon to commerce" W. H. Davenport Adams. "Men of the nineteenth century have pierced the Isthmus from sea to sea and these at least may stand in the shadow of the Pyramids and not be ashamed" Hamley.

Dated by Manby to London 28 October 1868. Letter head of 66 Warwick Square Pimlico. See the three men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with tape from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf which is docketted by Manby. Signed ‘J Emerson Tennent’. Folded once. He explains that a friend of his ‘who is much interested about the Suez Canal is going to Egypt next week’ and that he has that day promised if he can ‘to obtain for him a copy of an Address which you once gave me but which I have put away so carefully that I cannot find it now delivered by J. M. McClean to the Institution in which he stated the cost already incurred and the large balance still required to complete the canal’. This is he believes ‘an un-satisfactory inference as to the power of raising so great a sum or rending it re-production’. In addition to the address he would like ‘any later documents shewing the state & prospects of the enterprise’. The Suez Canal took from 1859 to 1869 to build.
