Deze thema's hebben vandaag, meer dan twee eeuwen na de Verlichting, niets aan actualiteit ingeboet. De behandelde vraagstukken klinken in alle opzichten 'modern', ook op onderwijskundig vlak. Wie zich afvraagt hoe het komt dat architectuur en stedenbouw vandaag in ons land bloeiende universitaire disciplines zijn, krijgt hier een beeld van de complexe wortels die hieraan ten grondslag liggen. Misschien even verrassend is de onmiskenbare aura van het succes die de architectuur en de ingenieurskunde uit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden op het einde van de 18de en in het begin van de 19de eeuw omgeeft. Im Komitat Borsod-Abaüj-Zemplen ist -vom künstlerischen Gesichtspunkt her-gesehen - die Gruppe der kirchlichen Gebäude (Kirchen, Klöster, Glockentürme) die bedeutendste, aber zugleich auch die zahlreichste, da sie mehr also 40% der gesamten unter Denkmalschutz stehenden Gebäude ausmacht. Sie wird gefolgt von der Gruppe der Schlösser, Herrenhäuser und Landsitze, welche zusammen mit den Bürgerhäusern 23% des als Kunstdenkmal bedeutenden Bestandes des Komitates erreichen. Die im Komitat befindlichen 56 Schlösser und Herrenhäuser bedeuten 10% der unter Denkmalsschutz stehenden Gebäude des Komitates, wenn man das aber mit dem Bestand der wertvolleren Kategorie vergleicht sieht man, daß die Kunstdenkmäler aus dem Kreise der Kunstdenkmäler des Komitates die 20% erreichen und wenn wir die Zahl der eigenen als Kunstdenkmal geltenden Schlösser mit der des Landes vergleichen, bekommen wir auch 15%. Die Mehrzahl der Schlosser und Herrensitze, die Kunstdenkmäler sind, befinden sich im ehemaligen Gebiet von Abaüj (vormaliger Kreis Encs, wo 19 zu finden sind), in den Teilen von Zemplen im Gebiet des vormaligen Kreises Szerencs (wo es 13 gibt). Unter den Schlössern haben folgende landesweite Bedeutung: Das prächtige frühbarocke Schloß in Erdely, das siebtgrößte Schloß des Landes, die aus der Zeit der Renaissance stammenden Schlösser von Monok, Keked und Päcin oder das im klassizisti-chen Stil umgebaute Eötvös-Schloß in Säly, weiterhin das im zweitgrößten Park des Landes befindliche Kärolyi-Schloß von Füzerradväny. Erwähnenswert ist auch, daß zwei Ortschaften von Hegyalja im Verzeichnis mit je drei wertvollen Schlössern und Herrensitzen erscheinen und zwar Tolcsva mit 2 frühbarocken und 1 barocken als Kunstdenkmal geltenden Schloß, Tällya mit 1 frühbarocken und 1 im Zopfstil erbauten Herrensitz als Kunstdenkmal sowie 1 kunstdenkmalähnlichen Barock-Schloß. Die Schlösser haben in der Mitte unseres Jahrhunderts ihre ursprüngliche Funktion verloren und es brauchte eine bestimmte Zeit, bis sich ihre neue Funktion herausbildete. ? This is not a book on archaeology, nor, although it lays particular stress on the architecture, an architectural history of Istanbul. It is an attempt to present the urban history of a world-city called Istanbul, Constantinople, Byzantion in different periods of its history. It delineates historical circumstances, or sudden ruptures, but above all, it attempts to present this unique world-city as experienced by its citizens and visitors, and as imagined by the world at large. While recent researches on the topography, history and monuments of the city are integrated in the text, my intention is to present the essence of the historical image of Istanbul contextually within physical, social and cultural framework. I have no intention of breaking new ground on the topography of the city, but I wish to convey the terms of a unique human experience in one of the longest surviving cities of the world, built in a most beautiful and enchanting landscape. The great Byzantine scholar R. Janin speaks of various "visages" of the city composed through the rhythms of life or caprices of the emperors. Most of this intricate relationships created in millennia between men, site, and artifact are gone and difficult to visualize. In writing this urban history, while I try to remain objective, I know that I create a literary model using as reference the least changed of the historical elements, the surviving monuments, the site with its basic shape and articulations, and contemporary accounts -not necessarily sources of hard facts, but as primary expressions, reactions and emotions. Thus tryingto keep myself away, as far as possible, from speculation and methods of criminal fiction, I have delineated the history of this grandiose, dramatic and often cruel city of Istanbul‎

It has small views with a small scale of Tripoli, Europe, Egypt, and Nubia with the Arabian Peninsula. This map reflects the territories and situation of the last period of the Ottoman Empire soon after the Second Constitutional Era in 1908. Inside the red lines in this map shows the Ottoman territories in 1909 with its maximum extent, just before the Balkan Wars, (1912-1913). In Europe, Western Thrace territories up to Montenegro including Adrianople are within the borders of the Empire. E. Nardin was a French cartographer who prepared more than sixty maps in the early 19th century, especially mapping Middle Eastern, North African, Sub-Saharan African areas.
