Corpus of Medieval Misericords, France
Hardback, 452 pages ., 921 b/w ill., + ills., 215 x 280 mm. English ISBN 9782503512396. The Corpus of Medieval Misericords (XIII-XXVI) consists of five volumes; the first four focus on the misericords and related choir stall carvings in specific regions of Europe. The fifth includes an extensive iconographic index of themes common to various countries as well as themes that are unique to a single country. Volume I of this series, Medieval Misericords in France, covers approximately 300 churches that still contain gothic misericords with carved figures and narratives inspired by oral traditions suh as proverbs and folk tales, as well as by manuscript marginalia, romanesque capitals, illustrated bibles, engravings, playing cards... A vast portrayal of medieval life - rural activities, urban occupations, conjugal relationships, monastic life -- is displayed in these carvings under the seats of choir stalls along with costumes of the times, town and collegiate architecture, mechanical devices. Puns and rebuses are often intertwined with these themes to produce comic and, to twenty-first century eyes, mysterious puzzles. The global view of misericord carvings, generally ignored in studies of medieval art, is here presented as a multidisciplinary basis for further research by sociologists, historians, archeologists and other medieval scholars. Languages: English.

Corpus of Medieval Misericords, Iberia
Hardback, 284 p., + ills., 215 x 280 mm. ISBN 9782503514994. Following volumes include misericords in Iberia, Flemish and borthen Europe, Great Britain. This volume examines the medieval choir stalls, especially their misericords, in the Iberian Peninsula: Portugal and Spain, most of which are extraordinarily beautiful. Fourteen churches in Spain and two in Portugal still have sets of Gothic choir stalls. These sixteen cathedrals, churches and monasteries compare with over two hundred churches with medieval choir stalls in France. The Iberian choir stalls are mainly the original sets for that church. Those at Belmonte, however, were moved from Cuenca but they were the original set at Cuenca where they were replaced by Baroque stalls. The set that was destroyed at Tomar has also not been replaced with Gothic stalls. It should also be noted that while fewer churches are surveyed in this second volume, the percentage of narrative carvings is higher in Spain than in France where many of the early carvings are foliate. 750 misericords with narrative motifs have been identified on the Iberian stalls as compared with over one thousand in France. Such comparisons indicate the richness of the Iberian stalls, which have over twice as many narrative carvings per ensemble as the French stalls. This profusion of carvings necessitates a rather lengthy iconographic index in this volume. Most of the motifs on stalls in north and central Europe are repeated on the Iberian stalls. There are, however, fewer examples of some themes and more of others. It is rare in Iberia to find a carving of a New Testament scene. No set is concerned totally with the Old Testament as at Amiens and the former set at St Victor of Paris. However, Aristotle still carries Phyllis on his back, the fox preaches to the barnyard animals, the mermaid carries her mirror and comb and the peasant carries his sack to ease the burden on the donkey. The proverbs in Spain and Portugal are mainly Flemish with some additional local sayings. We see more of Hercules in Iberia and more illness. In addition to carved misericords in Iberia, sculptures adorn the arms, dorsal panels, canopies, and partitions between the seats, arm-rests and other structural components. Some of these elements, such as canopies on the base stalls and canopy dividers (roundels or teardrop-shaped projections at the junction of the canopy with the dorsal panel on both base and high stalls) do not even exist on the choir stalls of other countries. Arm-rests in Iberia are usually elaborate and complement the motifs on the misericords. The profane carvings on these parts of the stalls are listed briefly in this volume since they are usually directly related to the misericord motifs. The battling couple may be seen not only on misericords but also on arm-rests, jouee panels, dorsal friezes and interdorsal roundels. The fable of The Fox and the Stork is repeated no less than four times on different parts of the Oviedo choir stalls. The men who carry the riches from the Promised Land on a Toledo misericord, show their fatigue by dropping their burden on a capping rail frieze. A mermaid swims on a misericord but attacking monsters surround her on a dorsal frieze. The repetition of profane carvings is unusual on choir stalls in other countries. At Hoogstraten in Belgium, however, a man gapes before the oven on a misericord and also on an arm-rest. Languages: English.

E. Mercier, R. De Boodt, P.-Y. Kairis (eds.)
Flesh, Gold and Wood. The Saint-Denis altarpiece in Liège and the question of partial paint practices in the 16th Century Proceedings of the Conference Held at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels, 22-24 October 2015
Softcover, 484 pages., 230 x 290 mm, Languages: English. Disponible en une seule version avec des articles en français ou en anglais. ISBN 9782930054407. The impressive altarpiece in the church of Saint-Denis in Liège is one of the most prestigious but also one of the most enigmatic witnesses to the rich Brabantine altarpiece production at the end of the Middle Ages. The interdisciplinary study carried out during its restoration at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels between 2012 and 2014 allowed to resolve some of the questions involved and to propose new refreshing hypotheses. The attribution to the Borman, the most prestigious Brussels sculptor family, was refined, as was its dating in the early 1530s, when the vocabulary of Italian Renaissance began to invade the art of the Meuse banks simultaneously with the still well-anchored Gothic style. This volume provides a broad platform for the exceptional character of the partial polychromy of the altarpiece, highlighted by the investigation conducted at the KIK-IRPA. This research was nourished by many comparative reflections. The abundant and varied studies presented here, mainly originate from an international conference held in October 2015. In addition, the restoration at KIK-IRPA, between 2016 and 2019, of some of the painted panels that initially adorned the shutters of the altarpiece, also allowed a beneficial reconsideration of the participation of the great Liège painter Lambert Lombard and some local workshop. Starting from an amazing work, they represent an important part of the artistic activity in Liège revived by Prince-Bishop Érard de La Marck.

E. Valdez del Alamo
Palace of the Mind. The Cloister of Silos and Spanish Sculpture of the Twelfth Century.
Hardback, 300 p., 300 b/w ill., 210 x 280 mm. fine condition !! ISBN 9782503517117. The extraordinary cloister of Santo Domingo de Silos is central to our understanding of medieval sculpture, and of Spain's place in its development. Elizabeth Valdez del Alamo offers an innovative reading of the monastery's medieval sculpture and the first complete study in English. Her carefully documented work revises many traditional theories about the site built during the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. Rather than expressing resistance to religious reform, as commonly held for the renowned Emmaus and Thomas reliefs of the first campaign, they embrace the newly imposed Roman rite. The sirens, dragons, lions, and birds of the capitals are shown to have significance beyond mere decoration. The inventive images of the second campaign, an Annunciation-Coronation and a Trinity set into the Tree of Jesse, derive specifically from monastic devotion, colored by local concerns such as the Reconquest. Languages: English.

Defining Beauty. The Body in Ancient Greek Art
Hardback, 280x240mm, 272p, 250 colour illustrations, English edition . ISBN 9780714122878. Expo: 26/03/2015 - 05/07/2015, British Museum, London Greek sculpture is full of breathing vitality and yet, at the same time, it reaches beyond mere imitation of nature to give form to thought in works of timeless beauty. For over 2000 years the Greeks experimented with representing the human body in works that range from prehistoric abstract simplicity to the full-blown realism of the age of Alexander the Great. The ancient Greeks invented the modern idea of the human body in art as an object of sensory delight and as a bearer of meaning. Their vision has had a profound influence on the way the western world sees itself. Drawing on the British Museums outstanding collection of Greek sculpture including extraordinary pieces from the Parthenon and the celebrated representation of a discus thrower and through a number of themed sections, this richly illustrated book explores the Greek portrayal of human character in sculpture, along with sexual and social identity. In athletics, the male body was displayed as if it was a living sculpture, and victors were commemorated by actual statues. In art, not only were mortal men and women represented in human form but also the gods and other beings of myth and the supernatural world. In a series of lively introductory chapters, written by a selection of academics, historians and artists, it is revealed how the Greeks themselves viewed the sculpture (which was vividly enhanced with colour), and how it was regarded and treated in later pagan antiquity. The revival of the Greek body in the modern era is also discussed, including the shock of the new effect of the arrival of the Parthenon sculptures in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
