Single sheet folded in two Japanese text and plan of the exhibition reverse blank 12 x 16.5cm light creasing few small closed tears at margins otherwise very good. This small brochure highlights the Port Arthur Sea Battle Exhibition Hall a pavilion featured at the 1910 Kansai Fuken Rengo Kyoshinkai 10th Kansai Prefectural Joint Exposition held at Tsurumai Park in Nagoya from March to June 1910. Attracting over 2.6 million visitors the exhibition showcased diorama models of the battle operated by newly imported electrical machines from the United States. The brochure emphasises the immersive experience suggesting spectators would feel transported to the heart of the conflict. Entrance fees are also listed. Glasgow: Dalross Limited 1911. A presentation copy bound in one volume. 12 viii 4-10 6 11-1155pp. With an initial catalogue of advertisements and one in-text engraved map. Original publisher's gilt-decorated blue cloth lettered in gilt to spine and upper board. Lightly rubbed and marked with slight wear to extremities. Spotting and browning to endpapers otherwise internally clean and crisp. A fine 'presentation copy' of the detailed catalogue produced for the 1911 Scottish Exhibition of natural history art and industry held in Glasgow. The first trade edition was issued in two volumes shortly afterwards. The third of four international exhibitions held in Glasgow during the late Victorian period the fair which attracted over 9.3 million visitors featured numerous cultural and industrial artefacts but drew criticism for its inclusion of human exhibits including a 'village' of Highlanders and displays of people from Lapland and West Africa including several children. The fair's profits allowed for the creation of a Chair of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow first offered to Scottish historian Sir Robert Sangster Rait 1874-1936. . No publisher stated revised and corrected edition 1905. Cloth gilt cover title 4to 27 cm. viii 203 pp 16 leaves of plates. From the introduction: "The Church History Exhibition held at St. Albans was intended to illustrate the History of the Church of England before and since the Reformation from the earliest times to the present day. With this object in view the Committee set themselves to gather together a selection of manuscripts books charters plans proclamations Acts of Parliament portraits views church-furniture vestments ornaments and plate and the result of their labours was an exhibition of great interest and of much educational value. Among the earlier exhibits may be mentioned the plan of the 4th Century Church at Silchester Hants the 8th or 9th Century Book of the Gospels from Hereford the 10th Century MS. of Bede on the Apocalypse from Lambeth William the Conqueror's Charter to Ramsey Abbey 12th Century Paten and Episcopal Ornaments from Chichester the Bishop of Truro's Mass-book of the 12th and 15th Centuries partly of the York Use the great MS. Bible written and illustrated at Winchester in the 12th Century the Hereford Breviary of the I3th Century the Sarum Breviary of the 14th Century from Lambeth Mr. Huth's MS. Missal of the 14th or 15th Century portions of a 14th Century Cope from Steeple Aston some 15th Century Panels of Alabaster MSS. of a Portiforium an Antiphonar a Grail a Processional and a Book of Hours - all of the 15th Century and all according to the use of Sarum - a MS. York Missal an Obituary Roll of an Abbot in Norfolk about 1450 a Herse Cloth or Funeral Pall 15th Century a sumptuously bound and illuminated Indenture dated 1504 concerning the Obit. of King Henry VII. in the Lady Chapel at Westminster a Pyx Cloth from Suffolk and the Dunstable Herse cloth. The Collection of Church Plate which was one of the features of the Exhibition included some earlv examples of Chalices and Patens found in the graves of Bishops and Clergy in various parts of England. It is not possible to call particular attention to any of the very large number of printed books which were exhibited but the cases full of Service books Primers &c were deeply interesting and Lord Crawford's collection of Proclamations and a collection of all the most important Acts of Parliament bearing on the Reformation added much to the educational value of the Exhibition. The wonderful series of Prayer Books from Edward VI. to Edward VII. and the collection of various translations of the Bible into English are catalogued apart from other MSS. and printed books." The section on bibles items 563-597 on pages 146-158 is entirely devoted to pre-1700 Bibles including one later facsimile with notes providing brief descriptions and putting each Bible in context. Contemporary self-printed black paper covers white lettering printed on front cover title in white ink manuscript punch-sewn at spine w/ red silk braid minor edgewear slight bumping to 1 corner minor over-exposure to some of the images still a VG exemplar. An original vernacular souvenir photo album created by an unknown amateur photographer documenting their tour of the famed 1904 St. Louis World Louisiana Exposition World’s Fair using their own camera -- typically after paying an entrance fee as inaugurated at the 1893 Columbia Exposition over 10 years before. The album opens with views of the Palace of Liberal Arts Festival Hall and the fountains Terrace of the States Electricity Palace Education and more. Along with many of the general public fair-goers these photographs reflect a fascination with the ethnological “Human Zoo†exhibits at the Exposition including the Igarrote-Filipino Village with one young child striding in the fore-ground the Philippine Restaurant and view of the Village with huts temple and walled city. Also featured are a few of the Japanese tea garden and pavilion and the Chinese temple exterior and interior. The photographer also captured the Life-Saver’s Exhibit by the Lifesaving Service; the Jefferson City Guards marching in front of the Austria & Sweden Buildings as well as the entrance to “the Pike†with visits to the Japanese Roof Garden Restaurant Beer Garden and German Coffee House. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition spread over 1200 acres and incorporated education into all aspects of the exhibitors including blacksmiths at work Native Americans living in their villages transplanted Philippine Moro natives elephant trainers lion tamers and more. Visitors to The Pike -- the mile long midway -- could scale the Tyrolean Alps visit Blarney Castle a Parisian fashion show dive under the sea or ride a burro to Cliff Dwellings. The 1904 St. Louis Fair also featured the first Airship races contest which offered a prize if the competing airships could complete the course three times at a speed of 15 m.p.h. A photo of Hippolyte Francis’s airship Ville de St. Mande depicts the airship in flight with a 100 foot long gasbag and 35 feet in diameter. The Exposition coordinated with the WPA to erect permanent buildings monuments statues and grave markers and the Hall of State was part of the funding. Billed as the first World’s Fair in the Southwest the Cavalcade of Texas and The Hall of Negro Life proved to be two of the most popular attractions. The unofficial Fort Worth Texas Centennial was a competing attraction produced by Billy Rose with nearly 1 million attendees while the Dallas Texas Centennial achieved nearly 6.4 million visitors. One original albumen stereoview photograph sized 7.25 x 3.75 in. scalloped upper fore-edge mounted on 7.25 x 4.25 in. gray studio board photographer’s imprint and image number on verso minor scuffing minor edgewear still a VG exemplar from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. A very scarce original albumen stereoview of the 1898 World’s Fair which like the 1894 California Midwinter Fair was inspired by the 1893 Columbian Exposition and spread across 184 acres at the northern edge of Omaha near the Missouri River. The Grand Court known as “The New White City†consisted of majestic temporary structures and statuary largely covered in plaster along with lush gardens and a canal with fountains and gondolas in contrast to Omaha which was still a fairly small frontier city. Hull 1880-1949 was an 18-year-old Kansas photographer who subsequently moved with his mother Sarah Adeline Hull 1843-1932 to Medford Oregon where he established himself as a scenic photographer & printer for over 20 years before moving to Chico CA. Both covers detached and with age-toning to edges. Interior quite sound. A remarkable exhibition-in-print of the variety of world ethnicities arrayed at the Chicago World's Fair. This aspect of the midway was an exploitative carnie-like objectification of human beings featuring a Kurd a female Turkish dancer swordsmen from Damascus a "donkey boy" from Cairo et al. Scarce: OCLC locates only two cataloged institutional copies at the University of Michigan and the Michigan State Library. Now housed in a removable clear archival sleeve with an acid-free backing. First edition of this exceedingly scarce excursion guide for travelers on the American Line enroute to enjoy the 1897 General Art & Industrial Exposition of Stockholm World’s Fair held in 1897 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of King Oscar II’s reign. Visitors sailed on four different American Line twin-screw steamships including the SS New York SS Paris SS St. Paul and SS St. Louis. Featuring 3722 exhibitors from Sweden Finland Norway Denmark and Russia the exhibition was held on the island of Djurgarden and many of the structures still exist including the Djurgardsbron bridge Skansens Bergbana funicular railway now in the Skansen open-air museum and zoo and the Nordic Museum. Sadly Ferdinand Boberg’s famed 16820 square meter exposition hall with cupola and 4 minarets was demolished after the Exposition. No copies in Worldcat.
